I ease Taylor’s legs off mine and bend down to kiss her forehead. Mason definitely knows something, and I hope he’s willing to share now. I’m tired of waiting for answers.

We file in, each taking our designated seat. There was a time I wasn’t allowed to take part. Back when I was a prospect with Dash, I wondered if I’d ever get patched in.

“I have a lead on a possible holding place for The Harvester,” he announces, tossing down some photos. “This place…I used to go to this place as a kid. It’s an old barn that’s been abandoned for as long as I can remember. I checked it out and there are signs that someone has been there. I can’t guarantee it’s The Harvester or any women, but my gut tells me it is.”

“What aren’t you telling us, Mason?” I ask.

The room is silent, waiting for his answer. He runs his hand through his hair and heaves out a sigh.

“I know who The Harvester is. It’s my brother. What’s fucked up, is that he’s been dead for seven years.”

Keep your head down. Keep your mouth shut. I’ve tried following those two rules from the first day I arrived at the California State Prison. Of course, it’s not always possible to keep your head down and your mouth shut. You can’t appear weak, even if you’re terrified enough you think you’ll shit your pants. Weakness is preyed upon here. There’s no such thing as mercy.

If you’d asked me seven years ago where I thought my life was headed, I can guarantee I wouldn’t have answered prison. I had a great job working for the city, a nice apartment, and a woman who could deep-throat my dick better than a politician could tell a lie.

Fucking Marnie. I don’t fully blame her for my situation. I made the choice to rob that store. She didn’t force me into it. Therapy with Dr. Cartwright taught me that. I had to take responsibility for my actions. To accept that the decisions I made had severe consequences.

But therapy didn’t teach me that the only person I can trust is myself. Hell, sometimes that’s not even the case. I do know one thing, though. I will never trust another female.

I trusted Marnie, and she maxed out my credit cards and cheated on me with her cousin. Prick probably isn’t even her cousin. That was just an excuse for her to spend time with him right in front of my fucking face and me not be suspicious.
