“At what cost?”

I furrow my brow. I’m offering this man his freedom, and he’s balking. I don’t get it. He would rather rot in prison for thirteen more years than be released. By taking my deal, he’ll have a place to stay, a job, a vehicle. Freedom. That should be enough for him to agree.

“At what cost, Harloe?”

The way he says my name takes me aback. He should call me Ms. Kelley or Lieutenant Kelley. He hasn’t earned the right to call me by my first name.

“It’s Ms. Kelley or Lieutenant Kelley. And I don’t follow you. This is a one-time get-out-of-jail-free card.”

“Free? Ha. That’s bullshit. There’s always a cost. I get my freedom, but how much of my flesh are you going to take?”

“You get your freedom. But, yes, it will cost you one thing. Whatever it takes to bring down the Iron Claw MC.”
