Chapter Nine

Psycho

I tap my thumb on the steering wheel. I watched her run into the house, tears streaming down her face. Knowing it would be too much for me to go knock on her door and check on her, I text Lexi, asking her to call Evie and do it for me.

The urge to put myself in her life at every opportunity is intense, but I don’t want to scare her away. Her beautiful face shouldn’t be marred with tears. A woman like her should have nothing but happiness.

I drive away from her house and head for home to exchange my car for my motorcycle. I much prefer to be on my bike because I don’t feel trapped as I do in the car. Though driving with Evie makes it much more bearable.

My phone vibrates twice against my leg, notifying me that Chaos has called Church. He has his own setting, so I know when he’s trying to contact me while I’m on the road. Revving the engine, I ride hard along the seafront and cruise through the club gates minutes later. Parking in my usual spot, I swing my leg over my bike and head inside, following brothers into the back room. I take my seat as Mayhem closes the door, and Chaos slams the gavel down on the wooden table, silencing everyone in the room.

“First order of business is working out the details for our next shipment.”

“There’s not much to work out. It’s pretty much the same as the last two, only this time, the order is higher,” Mayhem counters.

Chaos nods. “Any problems I need to hear about?”

I clear my throat and sit forward, resting my arms on the table. “I have a problem.”

Chaos’s brows nearly hit his forehead, but it’s Mayhem who asks, with a bit of shock in his tone, “You have a problem?”

Riot interjects, “You have a problem you want us to help with?”

As if I’d need help of any kind. I’m the one people come to for help with a problem.

“I don’t need help with shit,” I spit out.

“Then what’s going on, Psy?” Chaos questions.

“Our problem is the prospects. They were in the Grey Dog pub a couple of nights ago, getting into it with some local lads.”

Everyone around the table seems to relax. It took time to figure out how my brothers work, how they think, and what moves they make on instinct. But sometimes, I wonder if I got it right. What the hell did they think I’d need?

Chaos laughs. “I take it you asked them nicely not to fight?”

“Yeah, something like that,” I mutter. “Anyway, they annoy the shit out of me. They’ve gotta go.”

“Everyone annoys you. What’s so different with these prospects? They’re the best we’ve had in a few years,” Mayhem points out.

“When the time comes to vote, and you still have a problem with them, exercise your right. Until then, we continue to see what they’re made of.” Chaos slams down the gavel, effectively ending the meeting.

Brothers push out of their seats and head out into the bar, ordering drinks and instructing the dickhead prospect to turn up the music.

Saturday night is party night around here. I usually kick back and watch the brothers relax with their old ladies, or the single brothers lapping up the attention from the hang-arounds. But tonight, I’m on edge. I perch my arse at the bar and nurse a beer, feeling the tension coursing through me. I’ve watched Chaos find love with Olivia and lose himself to her. The same goes for Mayhem and Lizzie. I was happy for them in my own way, and not once have I been jealous, never coveting what they had. But the moment I saw Evie, it triggered something inside of me, and I wanted what my brothers have for myself.

And thinking of Evie, my phone pings with a message from her.

Hey.

I smile, tipping my beer to my lips. It’s just one word, but it’s better than none. Honestly, I’m surprised she’s reached out. I can imagine how nervous she was typing out that single word. And knowing she’s probably regretting it already, I don’t hesitate to reply.

Hey. You okay?

I’m good. Are you busy tonight?

Not now, I’m not. What do you need?

I want her to need me. I need her to make a move, to show me I’m not just seeing things… again.
