I light up as I make the call. I can’t stand still. I bounce on my toes as I wait for her to answer.

Though I feel nothing but delight that the old bastard has passed the fuck on, and is on his way down to Hell, my sister won’t feel the same. I need to tell her before one of the soulless screws does.

“Hey,” she answers quietly.

“Hey, I’ve got news.”

“Dad’s dead.”

Taken aback, I don’t respond.

“He’s dead, isn’t he?”

Clearing my throat, I tell her, “Yes.”

The line goes quiet, and I let her have a minute. “Why did you first guess that?”

“I felt it, I guess. Besides, it’s not like you to call this late with good news.”

“I do, actually… have good news.”

“Well, I could do with some, seeing as how I just heard my dad died,” she tries to joke, but it falls flat.

“I asked Evie to marry me, and she said yes.”

She asks hesitantly, “You finally spoke to her?”

In the three weeks away from Evie, I barely spoke but I managed one visit to my sister. I needed to know why she betrayed me. It hurt nearly as much as being apart from Evie. She wanted Evie to know everything about me and still want me. She promised she was only looking out for me and because I was so fucked up, I choose to believe her without a fight.

“She showed up at the club and stood her ground. She marked herself with my road name, Lex. She knows everything and accepts it, and still loves me.”

“Wow. I mean, I already think of her as my sister, and soon, it’ll be official.”

“As soon as I can get her up the aisle, it’ll be done.”

“I’m happy for you, big brother.” She pauses, giving me a bad feeling. “I don’t suppose you’ll help arrange the old man’s funeral, would you?”

“Not in this lifetime, Lex. I get you bonded with him or some shit, but I didn’t. The only thing I feel is for you. I don’t like it when you’re upset.”

“I wasn’t blind to who he was, Lou, but he was still our dad.”

Taking a long pull on my cigarette, I flick the butt across the garden.

“Fine. I’ll sort something out, but they’ll be no frills or poems… nothing.”

“Thank you. Oh, and Louis?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for not being smug about it.”

“I got you.”

She ends the call, and I tip my head back to look up at the moon. This morning, I had nothing. Tonight, I have the one thing I’ve needed since I was a child—the death of my father, and I have more than I ever thought I’d deserve—a family of my own.

I’ve spent years fighting for the club. I thought it was enough, but now that I have Evie and Thomas, I realise I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Locking up, I take the stairs two at a time. Evie’s sitting in the same spot, waiting on me, and I stand at the foot of the bed.

“What’s going on?” she asks.

“My dad died today. I had to tell Lexi.”

“Oh, God. How do you feel about it?”

“I feel fucking fantastic.” Undoing my jeans, I shove them down my thighs. “And I’m going to show you just how fantastic I feel.”

I’m still Psycho, always will be, but I’m her Louis, and that’s who she’ll always have.
