“Neither of you showed a bit of interest in having me as your mate,” I snap, my emotions getting the better of me. “You might be telling the truth, but that doesn’t mean you’re trustworthy in general.”

“Ali,” Silence says in a defeated tone that my magic hates.

“You think you’re the only one who’s suffered?” Hex lets out a low growl, pointing to his chest. “I haven’t been able to let my beast out in twenty-three fucking years.” He points at me. “You left us,you infuriating woman. You never gave us a chance before abandoning yourfated fucking mates.”

He’s right about that, but I didn’t have a lot of options. My magic managed to tear a portal through to the human realm, and I chucked myself through it. Portals aren’t a gift I previously mastered, and I’ve never been able to create one since.

I viewed it as a sign my magic was trying to keep me alive.

I won’t apologize for that.

I jab a finger at Hex. “I was barely conscious, and your court wanted you to consummate our marriage.”

“We never would have,” Silence says. “Did we ever give you the impression that we could be capable of such a thing?”

“We were trying to placate them into a false sense of security and give ourselves enough time to make a plan of escape. All of ustogether. We were going to try to reunite you with your sister in the human realm.” Hex’s gaze moves to the ceiling as his head shakes violently. “You never trusted us.”

“From the sounds of it, you never gave her a reason to,” Atlas says, cuddling his cheek to mine from behind. “Mates or not, she wasn’t capable of reading your intentions without a bite to solidify the link. Don’t pass the blame.”

ChapterTwelve

Hex

I’ve had the nearly uncontrollable urge to spank my wife’s ass for the last twenty-three fucking years. Yes, I’m bitter.

That orc and I are going to have it out before this is over.

I can fucking feel it. His half-giant heritage makes him a formidable opponent, but my kraken hasn’t been fully released since Ali ran from us.

I’ve dealt with turmoil and pain for so many years that it fundamentally twisted who I am.

“I believe we all hold responsibility for what happened in Faere.” Silence sighs heavily. “That doesn’t change the fact that you promised us an opportunity to prove that’s not who we truly are. The past is one thing, but we’re here now to solidify ourfuture.”

The orc grunts.

I glare at him.

He’s entirely too smug. Not to mention how comfortable he is with my wife pressed against his frame.

I don’t care if she doesn’t view our marriage as binding.

I don’t give a fuck that it was never consummated.

That’s my wife.

I’ve waited a goddamn eternity to sink inside a partner, and she ran from us for things we didn’t even do.

My kraken is itching to make a scene. He’s been in love with Ali since the very first time we caught sight of her. When we scented her, it was game-fucking-over.

She’s going to love us.

I’m going to make sure of it.

Three months feels like no time at all to ensure she wants to keep us around, but I’m not going to fuck this up again.

“I have to get to The Den,” she says. “There’s no way the owners are there after everything that happened last night with Emerson.”

“Do you think it’s safe for you to be around if the paranormal council is still investigating?” I ask as a jolt of terror goes down my spine.
