Wordlessly, we walk past Hayes and Felix, only pausing downstairs for him to help me clean and disinfect my wound before we step outside into the brisk night air.

“Fresh air helps me clear my head,” Shane offers with a small smile. “Maybe it’ll help you. Don’t worry about Hayes and Felix. You’re with me. I’ll protect you.”

I nod and give him a weak smile.

Eventually, we end up in a lesser habituated part of the compound, walking down a path lined with foliage. When I turn to face Shane, I see the same car that has been parked outside of the compound out of the corner of my eye, and my stomach twists. Slowly, I lean forward, pull Shane into a hug, and whisper into his ear. “That car has been following us.”

“Act natural.” Shane throws an arm around me, and our pace quickens. “I made a deal with Isaiah’s enemies to get us out because I had a feeling we were on our own. I was going to tell you but then I found out about your grandfather.”

I squeeze his hand. “It’s okay.”

Behind us, the car moves faster until it abandons all pretense of subtlety and guns for us. We barely have enough time to jump out of the way. We roll onto the sidewalk below as the car barrels past us, missing us by inches. We then watch it veer back onto the street.

As soon as Shane recovers, he pulls me to my feet, and we race back into the main part of the compound.

Upstairs, in his room, he begins to pace until I take one of his hands in mine, and he looks up at me.

“I want to take him down.”

Shane’s eyebrows draw together. “Your grandfather?”

I hesitated. “It’s the right thing to do. Since we’ll be getting out of here, we can help take him down from the outside.”

“Maybe you should sleep on it. I—”

I press my lips to his and bring my arms up around his neck. He holds himself still at first, then deepens the kiss and hoists me up. I wrap my legs around his waist. Shane wastes no time in maneuvering us toward the bed.

Slowly, he sets me down, pulls his shirt up over his head, and looms over me. One of my hands fumbles with the zipper of his jeans while the other runs over the slope of his bare back. Shane makes a low noise in the back of his throat, and I smile against his lips.

Before long, our clothes are in a heap on the floor.

Shane kisses a path from my neck down to my stomach and glances up at me. His eyes stay on my face until he settles in between my thighs and licks. Wave after wave of desire crashes over me while my hands wound their way through his hair. I give it a firm tug, and he growls, his nails digging into either side of my hips. His tongue deftly moves back and forth until I arch my back, the force of my orgasm ripping through me.

By the time my vision clears, Shane is on top of me again, positioning himself at my entrance. He lifts my arms up on either side of me and holds them tight as a vise. I squirm and make a low whimpering noise until he thrusts into me in one quick movement. My lips stretch into a slow smile when I lock my legs together and draw him closer.

Again and again, he thrusts into me while the sound of skin slapping against skin and the smell of our sweat fills the room. My nails claw against his back, and his mouth moves between my neck and breasts until my heart feels like it is going to jump out of my chest. Abruptly, I spasm and writhe as the force of my pleasure takes my breath away. Shane follows soon after.

“No more toeing the line, Evie,” Shane tells me in a quiet voice. “I’m sorry that it’s taken me this long to see the truth, but you’re right. I can’t protect Isaiah anymore. I don’t want to be that person anymore.”

I stir and look up at him. “I’m sorry.”

Shane touches my face. “I’m sorry too, about all of this. I should’ve stopped years ago, but I didn’t think I was capable of walking away from my past. Thank you for believing that I can.”

My throat closes up with emotion.

“I am going to do my best to make it right,” Shane whispers, his hot breath dancing on my face. “For all of us.”

I search his face. “Me too.”

Later, as I am drifting off to sleep, Shane holds me to him and presses a kiss on top of my head. “I’m going to protect you, I promise. No matter what happens. You’re safe with me. I’ve got you.”

EPILOGUE

Shane

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

I turn around and give her a quick peck on the lips. “We’ve already talked about this.”
