“I see,” I reply faintly.

“My plan isn’t to bring you back kicking and screaming, Felicity. I prefer that you come back by your choice,” Basque says, stroking my cheek. “I won’t ever force you.”

“And, if you go against his order, what happens?”

“I’ll deal with the consequences,” he shrugs as thoughconsequencesare no big deal.

In our world, consequences could be the difference between life and death. Not obeying the boss’ orders wouldn’t be a simple slap on the wrist. It would most likely be a bullet in Basque’s head. He may be Nico’s best friend, but he’s also Nico’s Underboss. That’s a position that requires respect, loyalty, and trust. If Basque goes against it, that’d be the end for him.

“We both know that would end badly,” I shake my head. “That’s not an option, Basque.”

“You going to come back then?” he asks, making me groan. “Exactly. You aren’t coming back so what other options are there?”

“Do we have to talk about all of this right now? Can’t I just enjoy being in your arms again?” I rest my head against his chest. “It’s just us. We don’t have to look over our shoulders, worrying about Nico or one of the guys catching us.”

“True,” he chuckles. “Guess you should have run away sooner.”

“Guess so,” I laugh, closing my eyes and enjoying his warmth and scent.

He rubs my back and kisses my forehead.

“We’ll figure it all out, Baby. I promise,” he assures me.

His words are comforting in a sense, but deep down I know the storm has yet to hit. When the storm does arrive, it’s going to be a fight of a lifetime. I can only hope that at the end of it, I can get my freedom and keep Basque out of harm’s way.

Chapter Six

Basque

A few hours have passed and my nerves are still shot to hell. I know I should be taking Felicity back to Nico, but I don’t have the heart to. Her happiness matters the most. There’s no guarantee that Nico will loosen the hold on her, even if she was to go back. Chances are, he’d be even harder on her since she disobeyed and ran off.

No matter how I look at it, this is a lose-lose for me.

“What are you thinking about?” she asks, snuggling against me.

“Did I wake you?”

“No,” she shakes her head. “I was just laying here with my eyes closed.”

“Lots on your mind?”

“Understatement,” she sighs. “Couldn’t sleep?”

“I slept a little,” I lie.

There’s no reason to add more to her plate. This is a burden I need to carry alone. My decision was made before I ever left Nico’s compound. I knew I wouldn’t be returning with Felicity.

“Basque?” she whispers.

“Yeah, Babe?”

“Everyone else in this world can lie to me but not you. Okay?”

“I try not to,” I say, kissing her.

“Tell me what your plan is then.”

“No,” I state firmly, shaking my head. “Let’s just enjoy being together. Nothing else matters.”
