“If you’re not up for lunch right now,” Rafe says, “and you’re done confirming that you can’t escape my property, we can go for a swim instead.”

“I wasn’t—”

I catch myself before lying that I wasn’t thinking of escaping. Rafe must have seen my activities on a security camera or been told by one of his security peeps.

“I wasn’t done confirming,” I finish.

He gives me a half smile. “I like the honesty. I’ll meet you at the pool.”

I didn’t agree to go swimming, but that’s fine. Maybe a dip in the pool will help wash away some of the horror I still feel about what happened in Nanjing.

“Before we go swimming,” I say, “have you heard from Alessandro or my brother?”

“I haven’t.”

“Is Alessandro still around?”

“He hasn’t skipped town. I’m keeping an eye on him.”

“Can I try my brother again?”

Rafe pulls out his cellphone and hands it to me

“This is a nice phone. I’ve never seen it before. It’s so lightweight.”

“It’s a product of Superior Five Elements Technology, a Lee family corporation.”

“Why do you need to be part of a triad if your family owns a legitimate business?”

“That’s a different side of the extensive Lee family, and I’m several cousins removed.”

Still,I think to myself as I try my brother. The call goes direct to voicemail.

“Can I text him?” I ask.

“I’ll text it for you. What do you want to say?”

I hand him back his phone. “It’s Priscilla. Call me. It’s urgent. Also, I’m worried about you.”

When he’s done with the text, I add, “I feel like something’s happened to him. Even if he doesn’t think it’s me, it’s not like him to just unplug or ignore everything.”

––––––––

“MY PEOPLE ARE LOOKINGinto it already. It might speed things along if you have information that is helpful.”

I’m not sure I want Rafe’s people to find my brother. “I don’t think I have any useful information,” I reply.

“Let me know if you think of anything. We already know the flight he took and that he checked into the Vista Marina Resort.”

I frown. I don’t want them to reach Peter before I do. I’ve got to find a way to warn him. “How do you know all that?” I ask.

“That was easy, Priscilla. What kind of gangster do you take me for?”

A damn good one, I suppose.

He takes a step into my space. “It’s best not to hide things from me. I’ll figure it out eventually. And I don’t like it when people try to deceive me.”

Does he think I’m trying to deceive him?I worry. He stands so close that I don’t know if he’s trying to further intimidate me or kiss me.
