Just in case she didn’t get off this ship anytime soon.

“Did he put the package in the…place?”

“I don’t know.”

The door opened, and the guards dragged someone in, threw him on the bed.

Shae stilled.

“Judah,” Vikka said.

He lay without moving as they zip-tied him, hand and foot, to the bed. In the wan light, Shae saw blood, shiny on his face.

She closed her eyes, unable to look.

“Zhenshina! Dvatset-tree!”

Twenty-three. She looked up. One of the guards held a phone. He snapped her picture.

What—?

“Proof of life,” Vikka said when he left.

She looked at Judah. Then she drew up her knees, put her head down.

What life?

Her breath began to hiccup.

“Nyet,” Vikka said from the other bed. “No cry. No. Cry.”

Shae looked up, blinked.

No cry.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

She swallowed and watched Judah in the dusky glow of moonlight. He lay on the bed, spread-eagle, bloodied, unmoving.

But in the darkness, she thought she heard a voice.

Have faith.

Right. Maybe faith was the only thing she had left when desperation moved into her soul. Because without it, there was only darkness.

Please, God, keep Ned safe. Be with him. With me. And help me to trust You.

“You are not alone, Shae. And you are still safe.”

She looked over.

Judah’s eyes were open.

“You’re alive.”

“Mm-hmm. And…” He smiled, glanced at Vikka, back at her. “It worked. Better than I hoped.” He then snapped his wrist free, the other one, then his legs.

“Do you need help?”
