“He went for a run.”

“Surviving in the Bering Sea isn’t enough of a workout?”

“He got a call from his Master Chief, and I think he wanted to take it outside.”

She blew on her coffee. She’d taken a total of five showers and one very long bath and still didn’t feel like she had all the grime of the prison ship off her.

Maybe she never would. Maybe the memories would always be with her.

Not all of them traumatic.

It means that in the middle of battle, when we’re surrounded on all sides, God still provides for us. In fact, He blesses us with more than we even need. We are still His chosen ones.

Judah. Her jaw tightened. What if he never made it off the ship?

The hard fist in her gut said he probably didn’t.

Her eyes burned.

“Shae?”

“I just…” She looked up at her uncle. Handsome, with dark reddish-brown hair, now in need of cutting, and the slightest reddish beard. Such a good man, he’d had his own losses—like his first wife and baby. “Thank you, Uncle Ian.”

He put his arm around her, pulled her to his side. “I told you long ago, Shae, that you were safe with me. You’re my family, and I’ll always be there for you.”

“Chartering a coast guard ship—”

“Ex-coast guard ship. I think maybe Fraser’s friend Moose might be in need of a ship.”

“You’re going to buy him a ship?”

“No…well, he runs a SAR outfit out of Alaska, so it’s tax-deductible…”

She laughed. “Well…we weren’t going to last out there much longer, so…thank you.” She looked up at him. “But what I really meant was thank you for coming to get me all those years ago. And for keeping your promises. And for showing me that God does…choose me.”

He blinked down at her. Then nodded. “After my wife died, I thought God had abandoned me. Even betrayed me. I’d worked so hard, done all the right things…I thought I was in this life alone and it was up to me to save myself.”

She made a face. “I get that.”

“I know you do. And funny enough, it took me being thrown overboard and lost at sea to realize that Godhadn’tabandoned me. He, in fact, saved me. And He keeps saving me. Especially when I think I can go it alone.”

“So it’s in the genes.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“This independent streak.”

He made a noise of agreement. “I guess it is. I’m hoping that surrender and faith might also be in the genes then, too.”

“I think, maybe, God sent an angel to me while I was in prison.”

“Really?”

“His name was Judah. Lion. He said he was a spy, but…I don’t know. But he protected me and even blew up the ship so we could escape.”

“I still can’t believe you were on a Russian prison ship.”

“Me either. I’m afraid to think what’s next.” She took a sip of coffee.
