“For three days?”

“I ate too!”

He ran a hand behind his neck, blew out breath.

“Why? What’s going on—wait. Is it something with Tate? I thought Ziggy got him to the hospital in time.”

“No, he’s fine.”

Oh, and she shouldn’t ask. She was done with this craziness— Aw, “You talked to Ziggy?”

“Yeah, she showed up inside my house in Vienna.”

“It’s a trend, I see.”

“Your door was open.”

“Which door? I came in the sliding door.”

“The one on your street?”

Oh. She hadn’t even checked. A tremble started at her core. “There could have been someone in here, waiting for you.”

“No, waiting foryou. But there wasn’t, because I came in and checked the place.”

A beat, and then, “Whatareyou doing here, Hud?”

And suddenly it occurred to her that maybe… “Did you come here toprotectme?”

He made a sound, deep inside his chest, as if he didn’t want to agree but couldn’t help himself. “Ziggy thinks you’re in trouble.”

She stared at him, at the way his mouth tightened as if not wanting the words to spill out.

“Okay, just tell me already. What kind of trouble?”

He suddenly looked at her, his eyes widened, then he took two steps and pulled her away from the window. She shook out of his grip.

“What was that for?”

“I’m not great at this game—but you shouldn’t stand in front of open windows.”

“Why not—I’ll get sick? A little breeze—”

“You’ll get shot.”

She had nothing. Just…nothing.

“Sorry. That came out worse than I meant, or…I dunno. Maybe not.” He met her gaze. “According to Ziggy, there’s a hit out on you.”

“A hit? Like—”

“Someone wants you dead. And is hoping to hire someone to do it.”

She just stared at him.

Then, outside, a bang sounded.

And just like that, Hudson grabbed her, pulled her to himself, turned and shoved her against the wall.
