“This is too much.”

He just stared at her. She met his gaze, and everything inside it chilled him,

“I don’t think we should tell them.”

He just blinked at her.

“I mean…” She looked at Garrett. “They have lives…”

“Jenny!”

“Ned could lose his career! And Fraser—he’s been through so much, and Jonas wants to go back overseas, and Irislivesoverseas…”

He turned away from her, beseeching the doctor for a little backup. “I can’t believe I’m hearing this.”

“Can I get on a donor list?”

Dr. Brian raised an eyebrow. “Yes. But your former cancer diagnosis will be a hiccup.”

“Let’s do that.”

“I can’t even…” Garrett got up, walked to the window, braced his hands on the window ledge. “I can not—”

“It’s my life. My choice.”

“It’sourlife!”

Oh, he didn’t mean to explode. Not here, not in front of Doc Brian, who just sat at his desk, hands folded, looking nonchalant.

Clearly this wasn’t the first marriage argument waged in his office.

But it was one of the first in years between he and Jenny. Usually, they always…saw…eye to…

“Jenny, what’s going on?” He’d lowered his voice, turned it soft. Walked over to her and knelt in front of her. Tears rimmed her eyes. “Tell me what’s happening here.”

She gave him a sad look, then directed his gaze at Doc Brian. “Is it possible that the surgery won’t work?

“Yes, of course, but—"

She held up her hand. Looked at Garrett. “That’s why. Imagine how one of our children would feel if they gave up part of their liver and I still died. The sense of failure, and helplessness and frustration and…” She touched his face. “I love you Garrett, and I love our children. But I need some time. I just…” She sighed. “Please put me on the list, Doc.”

Garrett knew that look. He’d get nowhere if he pushed today. But, “This conversation is not over, Jenny.”

She pulled her sweater even tighter. Looked out the window.

And even he knew.

There was a storm coming. And he wasn’t sure any of them would survive.
