“Maybe he didn’t know Tate was about to be stabbed.”

Hud raised an eyebrow.

“Right. Okay, frame you—maybe frame me? Because he had to know that I wouldn’t just let someone die out there on the bridge.”

He smiled at her then. “You would have helped me, even if you thought I was a traitor?”

“I wasn’t sure you weren’t until I saw Tate.”

“Oh.”

“But no, Hud. In my gut, I knew you weren’t that guy.”

She met his eyes, and something warm settled in her chest. Okay, it had been there for about two days, since he’d taken her hand in the water and helped her swim to safety. And then yesterday, at the hotel room, when she’d seen Abe go down.

He’d hugged her. And for a long moment, she hadn’t wanted to leave, so…yeah, that was a problem. Because…well, just because.

The list was long. And started and ended with him being a football player.

Only part of it was because she was an official.

So down, girl. They were just friends.

The kind of friends who apparently nearly died together. And now… “So, what? You think they’re after officials?”

“Maybe, yes.” He met her eyes. “What if this is bigger than you? What if your whole crew is in danger?”

Her whole crew.

“We should call Ziggy,” she said.

Banging on the door made her jump. “Lemme in! I gotta go!”

Genesis.

Iris shrugged, and Hud moved away from the door, opening it.

Genesis looked at Hudson, then Iris, and put a hand over her mouth.

“Stop, kid. We’re just talking,” Hudson said and pushed out of the room.

Iris followed him, and Genesis stepped inside.

Half the guests, however, stood in the hallway, which had gone sort of quiet as they emerged.

Oh. Um…

Yannick stood in the hallway, his arms akimbo, and raised an eyebrow.

“Excuse me,” Iris said and headed past Hudson, toward Yannick.

He followed her into the family room, where she headed to the food table, suddenly ravenous. Macaroni and cheese—finally, some comfort food. She picked up a plate.

“Is there something you want to tell me?” Yannick came up next to her. “I already talked to Hudson—he says that—”

“Nothing is going on,” Iris said. No silverware, but she picked up a napkin. “Really. We just…happened to…”

“Need the bathroom at the same time?” This from line judge Zach Warton, who came up beside her.
