She washed her fork, then dropped it in the container.

“So, you and Zach, huh?”

She turned and Hudson leaned against the doorframe.

“No. I mean—I’m not sure what that was, but…”

He sighed, folding up his plate. “I didn’t mean to get you in trouble.” He shoved the plate into the trash, then pulled up the edges of the plastic back and knotted it. Pulled it out of the container. Another bag lay inside, and he affixed that in place.

Such a helpful guy. Probably his babysitting of her had fallen into that category. Something she needed to remember.

Barely friends. Right.

“I thought you were leaving.”

He stood up, holding the trash bag. “Uh, I thought maybeweshould leave.”

“We?”

“I mean…not together, but…um…” He ran a hand behind his neck. “Okay, so, I’m still thinking that maybe I need to get you home, safely.”

“Hud.”

“I made a promise to your brothers.”

“I think you did your part.”

“Not until we know—Iknow—that nothing is going to sneak up on you in the middle of a dark alley.”

“That’s a little creepy.”

“Too many horror movies as a child. My brother loved them. But now I can’t get it out of my head.”

“Maybe we’re overreacting.”

“Boat. On fire. Boom!” He made a little hand gesture to go with it, his fingers opening. “And then shooting.” He made the appropriate gun symbol, along with sounds.

Shoot, he was cute.

“Okay, Bourne Identity, you can drive me to the airport. But if you get on the plane to Milan—”

“Deal.” He held up his fist. “But you won’t mind the little surveillance camera I add to your luggage, right?”

“You’re hilarious.” She went to push past him, but he grabbed her arm.

His smile had fallen. “In all seriousness—I know I’m not one of your Navy SEAL brothers, but promise me that if you get scared, if something happens, you’ll call me.”

“And you’ll fly in with your hammer and save me?”

He said nothing, his eyes in hers.

Oh. And the heat, the warmth was back, sweeping over her to her toes.

Then he smiled again. “I was thinking more of my cool new axe, Stormbreaker, but…that’s the gist.”

“What do you want me to call you?”

“God of Thunder?”
