“I look like Chris Hemsworth.” He too wore the boots.

“Don’t let that go to your head.”

“Way too late for that.”

She followed him out into the sunshine. “Now what, Skipper?”

“We go to the resort.”

“What resort?”

He turned to her. “The one we were supposed to stay at five days ago. It’s actually not far from here.” He pointed up the hill, the one with the switchbacks that led to the sprawling white village on the hill. “Except for the little hike there.”

“Now I understand the need for my special shoes.”

He smiled at her. “Hope you don’t mind the honeymoon suite.”

“You did not.”

“At the time, you were my girlfriend. Thought it was time to take the next step.” He started up the sidewalk.

Hudson. “Okay, stop.”

He turned, squinting at her in the sunlight.

“This is…I don’t know what’s happening here, but this isn’t a game, Hud. We…we nearly died. I thought—I’ve never been so scared in my life. And that was after the bullets and the fire. And you—you’re hurt. You might even need medical attention. But more—people are trying to kill us!”

He held up his hand, glancing around. “Ixnay on the illkay.”

She put her hands over her face. “Please, listen to me—”

“No, you listen to me.” And then he was right there, invading her space, so close to her that when she opened her eyes, she had to put a hand to his chest—his very Chris Hemsworth chest—to steady herself.

“I know this is not a game, Iris. But I was there last night too, and I remember how unraveled you were—”

“I wasn’t—”

“For Pete’s sake, Iris!”

“Just—whatever, okay? I don’t want to think about it!”

“Me either. In fact, right now, I just want a bed, and breakfast, and maybe not in that order, but the more I think about the last twenty-four hours, and even the last week, the more I’m back in that cave trying not to drown, so yeah, if I have to make jokes and pretend that we’re on a honeymoon, and laugh at your attire and the way you flirted with Nico—”

“I didn’t—”

“Kidding. See? You mad at me is better than you scared, right?”

She blew out a breath. “Yeah, I guess so.”

“Okay then. Let’s get to the hotel, and then if you want to fall apart, that’s fine. I’ll be on the phone to Ziggy trying to figure out our next step. Okay?”

“I’m not going to fall apart.”

He met her eyes, held her gaze. “Right. Okay. Good.” He stepped back. Took her hand. “Let’s try to not die between here and the hotel, okay?”

She smiled. “You do look a little like Chris Hemsworth.”

“I know.” He smiled. “Let’s hope the front desk clerk thinks so too.” Then he winked.
