They would slap me with all sorts of charges, making my life super difficult. And even worse, they would not protect me from the Moranos who were looking to kill me. Or worse.

And just like that, I signed my damn life away.

“Excuse me?” a loud annoying voice dragged me back to the present. “I’m talking to you here.”

I took a deep breath as I tuned back to the man standing across the counter—another pawnshop regular. We had been going back and forth about a lamp he wanted to sell for a thousand dollars even though it was really only worth fifty dollars, maybe. I was tired of the circular argument because it had already gone on for one hour.

“Yes, sir,” I answered. I didn’t bother giving him my usual customer service smile. He had worn that out with the first thirty minutes of arguing with me.

“So how much can you give me?” he questioned with a sniff. “I’m willing to take five hundred.”

I sighed again. “That lamp is worth nearly nothing.”

“What do you mean it’s worth nothing? I got it for literally two grand. It’s an antique.”

Antique doesn’t always mean good.“I can’t help you, sir. You need to leave.”

I could see the anger tighten his face, and a part of me welcomed a show of temper. I wanted an excuse to kick someone’s ass right now because of the restless energy that had been burning inside me the entire day. Since yesterday actually.

Because I’d dreamt of the almost kiss with Chris. I’d dreamt that it had become a full kiss and a little bit more. As humiliating as it is to admit, I had a dirty dream about my criminal boss.

This time, he’d pinned me against the door, taking my lips in a kiss that was as furious as the desire between us. I also dreamt about him placing me on the table, pulling out his cock, and pushing it slowly inside me until we were both mad with lust.

You dreamt about having sex with a murderer.

“Let me talk to your manager,” the belligerent man said.

“He’s not in,” I parroted. He hasn’t been in the last five times you asked, either.“If you want, I can send you his whole damn schedule, but right now, I can’t help you. Leave.”

For a second, I didn’t think he would. His face was set in that stubborn scowl that men his age usually had right when they were about to start hollering about their rights and bullshit.

But to my surprise, the man gave an indignant huff and grabbed the lamp, walking right back out to wherever he came from. Leaving me alone once more and no more relaxed than I was before.

I let out a sound of frustration as I heard the door open again.

“Problem?”

I turned to find Chris standing by the entrance, looking cool as a cucumber and amused as always. My irritation increased. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

He nodded. “Good. Meet me in my office.” And with that, he walked off toward said office.

Shit. Not this again.

I wondered what I would encounter today. Another seductive touch? I hated that I half wanted that to happen.

This time, when I went in, he was sitting behind his desk. He beckoned me closer without looking up, and when I neared him, he gestured to the seat opposite him.

Rather than sit, I remained standing. “Will this take long, sir?”

He finally glanced up from his computer and raised an eyebrow. “Do you have somewhere to be?”

“There’s no one else out front,” I pointed out. “I don’t want any customers to come in and think the place is empty. They might try to steal something.”

He gestured to the screen monitor that hung on one of his walls and said, “You can watch them from here.”

I nodded in defeat and descended into the seat, still feeling my heartbeat racing in my neck.

“About your dad,” he started up again. “After his death, his lawyer was looking for you. I don’t know if he found you.”
