The idea had my blood running cold, reminding me just how stupidly risky what I was about to do was.

But I didn’t have a choice. It was even riskier to be around Chris any longer, especially now that he knew I knew about the safe. The longer I stayed here, the more I risked my life and the crazier I felt.

So it was either go big or go home. I needed to find something on him today. Or else.

I glanced around before I headed to his office. Chelsea was already out for lunch. I told her not to worry about coming back early because I would work through lunch, and she’d said, “Nice. Thank you,” in that cheery way of hers.

I didn’t think she was going to come back any time soon. Chelsea was known for her long lunch breaks, and Paul had gone on an errand all morning, which meant I was alone.

This was my last chance.

I walked as normally as I could toward Chris’ office. I knew there were security cameras, but by the time he reviewed them, I would be long gone. Or, if I had time, I would try to get rid of the footage before he came back. I would figure that part out later.

The second I entered his office, I shut the door behind me and got to work. I went straight to the bookcase at the side of the room, and that was when I saw the edge of the safe peeking out.

It took a little bit of strength to shift the bookcase, but I tried to do it without making any noise.

Then, I pulled out my handy dandy lockpicking tools—thank God I carried them everywhere—and quickly went to town on the lock. I didn’t have much time, so I worked quickly and desperately, my arms steady even as my heart raced in my chest. An alarm beat at the back of my mind, telling me to go faster, and it thumped to the beat of the words running through my mind. This is insane. Hurry up. Get in. Get out.

All of a sudden, my ears perked up at the sound of the door opening and closing, and I froze.

Who was it? A customer? Maybe Chelsea coming back to grab something?

But then I heard the slow, steady steps and knew I was shut out of luck.

“Fuck.” I didn’t even have time to be horrified at the fact that Chris was back. Nerves had me dropping my tools, and I picked them back up quickly, tucking them into my back pocket. Superhuman strength filled me, and I picked up the safe, moved it back into place, and hastily took a few steps away before the door behind me opened.

He was here.

My blood instantly ran cold as I could feel him standing behind me. Still, I tried to pretend everything was normal, turning and shooting him a smile.

“You’re back early from lunch,” I added conversationally.

“What are you doing?” His voice was low, threatening, and made even more so by his expressionless features.

Was that the look he had right before he murdered someone? Or was it just my fear talking?

I faked a confidence I didn’t feel. “Dropped my earring earlier. I was just looking for it.”

He didn’t look convinced. “And you had to do it when I wasn’t here?”

I shrugged. “I just realized it was gone and thought I should at least look. It was my mom’s, so it has a lot of sentimental value.”

“Hmm.” He approached me with that same dark look in his eyes, and immediately, all my senses started to go haywire.

Danger. Danger.

Please.I started praying internally, trying to keep from shaking.Just let me get away this time. Just this once, let me walk out of here alive, and I will take the first bus out of town with or without Angel’s help.

“Are you sure that’s all you were looking for?” His voice was a low whisper, his hand wrapping around my waist and pulling me closer. “Or was there something else you wanted?”

“I—” My throat instantly went dry as his hand traveled down my waist and cupped my ass.“Hey,” I protested, even though my heart was thumping with fear as his other hand slipped over my neck.

Or maybe it wasn’t fear. Maybe it was fear combined with something.

God, what is wrong with me?

“Don’t think I don’t know what you want, pumpkin,” he whispered in the same tone, his breath brushing against my ears and making me shiver.
