Shit. The letter. That was what he wanted, wasn’t it?

“I don’t have money,” I said, thinking quickly. “But the people I work for do. A lot of it. And they’re going to get a big sum when they catch Chris.”

“Good for them,” he said. “Unfortunately for you, that will never happen.”

“No, you don’t understand. I’m talking a lot of money here. If you’re willing to just look the other way while I escape—”

“I do understand,” he said simply as we moved to the doorway leading to the alley behind the building. A few eyes glanced our way, but then they glanced away without registering that anything was wrong. “This isn’t the first time I’ve been offered a fortune to betray the boss, and it won’t be the last time. I’ve gotten them in very creative ways too.” His eyes ran down my body, and I shivered with disgust.

“But unfortunately for you, I’m more loyal than smart,” he said.

“Wait,” I said, trying to stall once again. “The cab driver. I have to pay him. Otherwise, he said he’s going to come in here and find me.”

“We settled him already,” the man said. “He was all too happy to take off when he received the payment.”

They knew I owed the cab driver, which meant they’d followed me here.

He nudged me through the door, and once we were through, he shut it behind him and leaned against it.

“So, what do we do now?” I asked dejectedly, feeling like all my faith and hope had disappeared.

“Now,” he said with a smile. “We wait.”

It took about ten to fifteen minutes before I heard footsteps around the corner of the alley. When I lifted my head, I saw Chris and two other large men approaching.

He smirked when he saw me sitting there on the ground, even as I glared back at him in defiance. He might have won this round, but I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cower.

He plucked the letter from my hand and then opened it up. After glancing over it once, he then proceeded to rip it up into shreds before taking a lighter from his pocket and setting it all on fire.

“So,” he started. “Now that the letter has been taken care of, let’s go into the real reason you’re here.”

“Fuck you,” I spat out, and the other men glanced at him, but he merely smiled.

“All in good time.”

What did that mean? Was he going to rape me?“I’d rather you just killed me once and for all,” I said again because I was so tired of being afraid. So tired of trying to run from my inescapable fate of doom.

“And who said I was going to kill you, love?” he said as he cocked his head at me. “I’m going to do the opposite.”

“What?” I exclaimed, my eyes widening in confusion.

“I didn’t come to kill you,” Chris clarified. “I came to save your ass from the Moranos.”

I froze. “How did you know about that?”

He pulled something out from his pocket. My phone. A phone I thought was broken, except it wasn’t broken after all.

“I found a lot of interesting things in here,” he said. “And I know exactly how much trouble you’re in. I can help you.”

“How?” The question slipped out before I could stop it.

He grinned as though he had me right where he wanted me. “You marry me.”

CHRIS

I looked at the amazement in her eyes that quickly transformed into pure horror.
