Suddenly, a gunshot rang in the air.

I screamed and squeezed my eyes shut even though I wasn’t in pain. Slowly, I realized I hadn't been shot, and then I heard footsteps thundering all around me.

When I opened my eyes, I saw men in black running toward us.

Familiar men.

Chris’ men. The loyal ones.

A wave of relief crashed through me so strongly that I cried.

I was saved.

30

CHRIS

The tension was ripping apart my gut.

It was killing me to pretend I was fine with this and that I didn’t fucking care about her. It was also killing me to just stand here while the bastard had the love of my life, especially knowing she was hearing everything I was saying.

But I couldn’t let Ferro know I was on to him or that I cared about her. That would tip him off to the plan as it was unfolding, and I couldn’t do that.

So I kept fucking still while Chase glanced at me from the corner of his eyes.

“Are you okay?” he asked in a quiet voice, and I gave him a scathing look that had him nodding.“Yeah, stupid question. Never mind.”

Yeah, it was. I didn’t know how anyone could be okay in a situation like this when, at any point, the son of a bitch could call me and tell me he’d done something heinous to her.

And thinking about her…God, she must be so scared. So terrified. I wondered if she had heard any of the shit I said and then felt like I was abandoning her. I wondered if I would have any time at all to rectify it and prove to her just how much she meant to me and how much I loved her and was going crazy for her.

“I should have gone with them,” I muttered to the air as I paced around in our meeting room.

Chase shook his head vehemently.

“He would be expecting it. It’s better for you to carry out the operation from here.”

“But what the fuck am I supposed to do now?” I exploded with the pressure ripping me apart. “Just stay here and twiddle my thumbs until he calls me up and tells me she’s fucking dead?”

Chase put a firm, reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Relax. He’s not going to kill her. The big fish is you. Above everything, he wants to get to you. If he kills her, he knows he would lose his only leverage.”

If he even thinks she’s leverage at this point.I played the part of a cold, unfeeling bastard very well.

I felt the knot in my stomach and decided there and then that never again. No fucking way was I going through this again, putting her in danger. I didn’t care who or what I had to give up. I was never going to put her in danger again.

“I’m truly done,” I told Chase, and he glanced at me curiously. “For real this time.”

His face tightened. He knew exactly what I was saying and what I was warning him about.

After today, I was done with The Brotherhood for good.

“Let’s not do anything rash,” he said placatingly. “I know this is a bad situation.”

“Bad situation?” I scoffed. “That’s a fucking understatement. I’m never going through this again. I don’t care how much you say you fucking need me. Because I’m done. Get that through your fucking skull. That’s all there is to it.”

He nodded, but I knew it was going to be a longer conversation for another day.

I continued pacing up and down, probably wearing a trail on the carpet.
