The police had pretty much dropped all charges against him at this point. Angel and his entire unit had been fired after it came out to the public—likely thanks to Chris—that they accepted bribes from the FBI branch chief to take Chris out personally. Angel had been humiliated by the entire ordeal, and the whole unit was facing trial.

As much as Angel and I had our history and differences, a part of me felt bad for him.

But I especially felt bad for Chris’ brother—Chase—and the rest of The Brotherhood. The Brotherhood and the FBI went head to head, and no side came out unscathed. The Brotherhood was pretty much dissolved at this point, and those who weren’t arrested had gone into hiding.

Chase was one of the latter.

When I asked Chris if he knew where Chase was, all he’d said was that he was safe.

Which meant he probably got his brother set up with a new identity and a comfortable life somewhere else. Chris always said he didn’t know where Chase was, which might be true, but I knew both of them still communicated secretly. Chris wouldn’t tell me, though, since secrets like that could get me in trouble.

And if there was one thing I was learning about my new husband, it was that he was pretty darn protective.

Still, I always asked him to send Chase and Doper my regards.

And while some part of me felt some guilt for playing a part in their downfall, I couldn’t even feel too bad about the whole ordeal.

Especially when I looked at Chris and saw the look on his face.

My husband had lots of looks, most of which I’d seen before this.

He had his loving look, his horny look, and his happy look. But as he leaned back and turned his face to the setting sun, his skin glowing and his hand curling around my waist and pulling me close, he gave me a look that I was only now getting used to.

It was a look of peace.

The End.
