While returning to Vegas with Emma by my side has felt surreal, so does the thought of telling my mentor that I’m moving to New York City and can no longer accept the job he’s been holding for me.

I pull open the door at McGregor & Lange. Sonny, the receptionist, smiles as I approach her desk.

“Hi, Sonny.”

“Griffin, so good to see you. I heard you were on a trip.”

“Yeah, I was.”

It’s still hard to believe that I left Vegas three weeks ago to pose as Emma’s husband, and I’m returning to Vegas to pack up my life and move to New York City to be with her.

“I’m here to see Terrence.”

“He just got out of a meeting, so I’ll let him know you’re here.”

“Thanks.” I take a seat on one of the leather armchairs in the waiting area.

A few minutes pass, and then Sonny motions for me to head back to Terrence’s office.

As I walk the hallway toward Terrence’s office, I think about the life I had planned after the revue.

I knock on his open door.

“Hey, kid.” He motions me in, then stands and circles his desk to give me a handshake and a hug. “Now I can congratulate you in person.” He claps me on the shoulder. “You did good. I’m real proud of you.”

“Thanks, Terrence.”

“Grab a seat.” He motions toward the guest chairs.

“Sophie got the flowers you and Rita sent for her graduation. That was very thoughtful.”

“It’s hard to believe she’s grown up now, graduating. You both have done well for yourselves.”

“I’ve always appreciated your and Rita’s support. I couldn’t have done it without you two. You know that, right?” I want him to know that the decision I’ve made has nothing to do with our relationship and the investment of time he’s made helping me out over the years.

“We supported and encouraged, but you, son, you did all the hard stuff.”

Sitting in front of Terrence now, I’m struggling to get the words out. To tell him that I appreciate everything he’s done for me, but I’ve found a new path. I found Emma and a life we can share.

“I know I’ll see you later at dinner, but I needed to talk to you privately.”

“Sure. I’m all ears.”

“The reason I wasn’t able to start here earlier was because I had some business to take care of in New York.” I explain everything to Terrence. Marrying Emma, going to New York to pose as her husband, and then, falling for her.

Terrence leans back in his chair. “Wow. I didn’t see that coming.”

“That’s why I came here to tell you I have to decline the job you offered me.”

He’s quiet for a moment. His hands pressed together, fingers steepled against his mouth as he thinks. Finally, he lets out a light chuckle.

“Good for you, kid.” He smiles.

“You’re not upset?”

He shakes his head. “No. The legal counselor in me could give you a spiel on how fast you’re moving, how you should proceed with caution. That’s what I’d tell a client. But with matters of the heart, it’s a whole different ballgame. And I know you. I know the man that you are and if you’ve fallen for this woman, then she must possess all the qualities that you desire in a partner. I don’t see that there’s even a case to argue.”

“Yeah,” I say, thinking of Emma. How perfect she is for me. How well we complement each other. “You’re right.”
