Sophie seems to be taking the announcement that I’m moving to New York well. I guess I’m the one who is struggling with leaving her behind.

“Yeah?” I ask, glad she’s in good spirits about the whole thing.

“I got a paid internship at Marion Adler Events.”

“Congratulations! I’m so proud of you, Soph.” We meet in the middle of the couch where I wrap my arms around her, squeezing her tight. Then I realize something. “Wait, isn’t that the one in New York City? The one you thought you’d never get in a million years but you applied for it anyway?”

Her smile is bright. “That’s the one.”

“So, you’ll be moving to New York, too?” I sit back, stunned, because I can’t believe how perfectly everything is working out, but then my protective brother alarm starts going off. “You’ll need to move in with me and Emma.”

She scrunches her nose like the idea is not appealing at all.

“In all your research of the city, have you looked at the astronomical cost of living? Even with a paid internship, you’ll need some time to get on your feet.”

“Yeah, I’ll need some time to find roommates my own age,” she says.

“That have been thoroughly vetted.”

She laughs, but I’m one thousand percent serious. Then, I realize I’ll need to make sure Emma is okay with Sophie living with us.

“I’ll need to check with Emma, make sure she’s good with it.”

“That makes sense.” Sophie nods.

“When does your internship start?” I ask.

“Two weeks.”

“We’ll be in our new place by then, so that should work.”

“Oh my God, I love this for us!” Sophie jumps up off the couch, grabs her phone and starts texting. “Maybe it’s not what you had planned, but it’s exactly what I’ve been working so hard for. My friends are going to freak out. I’m going to start packing. Oh, and don’t forget to check with Emma, okay, goodnight!”

Sophie rushes toward her room. I hear her already talking on the phone to a friend.

“You’re right, it’s not what I had planned. It’s even better.” I’m talking to myself but it feels good to say the words.

A few minutes later, I walk into my room to find Emma curled up in bed reading a magazine. The light from my bedside lamp illuminates her soft features. I take a moment to stare at her. Sophie and I have been in this apartment for the past seven years. There’s never been a woman in my bed here. Now, I’m taking in the view of my wife as she cuddles under the navy comforter, her hair spilling over my pillows.

Emma in one of my t-shirts is one of my favorite sights. She’s so fucking sexy. In our rush to pack she thinks she forgot pajamas. In reality, I removed them from her suitcase.

She looks up to catch me staring from the doorway.

“How’d it go?” she asks, tossing her magazine onto the nightstand and sitting upright, anxious to hear.

As I make my way over to the bed, I pull my shirt over my head and toss it on the desk chair.

“How do you feel about having a roommate for a while?” I ask.

“Who?” Her brows draw down, but then her eyes light with realization. “You mean Sophie? She’s coming to New York?”

“She got a paid internship at an event planning firm there.”

“Which one?”

“Marion Adler, I think it was.”

“Wow. That’s huge. She’s by far the most sought-after event planner in the city.”
