Page 33 of Unexpectedly Mine

My mind draws up the visual of Sophie’s petite friend.

“That doesn’t make me feel better. I could fit her in my pocket.”

“Relax. We ran the track outside the campus rec center. There were like a gazillion people there.”

“Hmm.” I know I’m overprotective at times, but I can’t help it. The moment Sophie became my responsibility, it became ingrained in my brain. I know she’s an adult now, about to graduate college, but I’m still having a hard time letting go.

I take another bite of pancake. The chocolate chips and whipped cream are sweeter than what I regularly eat for breakfast, but I know Sophie still loves them and there’s no way I’d ever say anything about it.

“Then, we watched a movie with her boyfriend. It was some serious third wheel action.”

“Good.”

“That I was the third wheel?” She lifts her brows.

I shrug. “Safety in numbers.”

She rolls her eyes at me. “What’s your plan for the day?”

Before I can answer, there’s a knock on the door, followed by the entrance of Sophie’s friend, Piper.

“I know I’m late!” she calls as she slams the front door. “We’ll do ninety on the highway and make up for time.”

“Hi, Piper.” I announce my presence.

She stops when she sees me.

“Griffin,” a look of surprise on her face, “lovely to see you this morning. What I meant to say was, let’s drive five under the speed limit and take our time. There’s really no rush.”

I’ve known Piper since the girls were in high school. She’s Sophie’s loud friend who has no filter. She’s also been pulled over for speeding a handful of times, yet somehow is always let go with a warning.

“That sounds good. Let me help you load the car.”

I stand, leaving my half-eaten pancake at the table. Sophie woofs down her last bite, then takes her plate to the kitchen.

“Thanks.”

“How was last night?” Piper asks.

“Sophie told you I went out?” I ask, putting on my shoes.

“Of course, she did. For the rare occasion that it was, it should have been on the news.”

I think about thePage Sixarticle following Emma’s viral video. It was news. Only I have the benefit of not having my face be on camera. And no one knowing who I am.

Piper grins flirtatiously. “And you should have called me.”

“Gross!” Sophie calls from where she’s collecting the rest of her things in the kitchen. “Stop hitting on my brother.”

I give Piper a kind smile. I have zero interest in her, but I’m not going to be a jerk about it. I grab Sophie’s suitcase and move toward the door.

“What’s that?” Piper asks.

I turn to find her staring at me.

“What?” I wipe at my face, wondering if I’ve got whipped cream caught in my stubble. But, when the cool metal of my wedding band hits my cheek and Piper’s eyes go wide, I know exactly what she’s talking about.

“Is that…” Piper’s brows pinch together as she points toward my hand.
