“No, I’m going to toss them at you and see if you can catch them in your mouth.”

I pop one straight into the air, then lean forward to catch it in my mouth.

“All right, let me try.” Her hands motion for me to toss her a grape. She leans too far forward and it bounces off her nose.

“That was a terrible toss,” she pouts.

“That was a superior toss.”

She rolls her eyes at me. “Try again.”

This time, the grape hits her front teeth and falls into her lap.

“Come on, Sophie,” I tease, “I know your oral skills are better than that.”

She tosses it back at me with no intention of me trying to catch it in my mouth because it’s a line drive.

“Again,” she says, motioning toward me.

The look of determination on her face is adorable. I toss another one, and this time she catches it in her mouth.

“Victory!” she cheers, lifting both arms above her head before grabbing the sun hat I brought for her and placing it on her head.

Sophie laughs. Her head tilts back, one hand holds her sun hat in place while the other presses into her chest. Being here with her, seeing her laugh and smile, it’s everything.

A moment later, she’s quiet, looking around the lake. “Wow. You’re really bringing your A game today.”

“I want to make sure I’m holding up my end of the bargain.”

I say it teasingly, but the words feel hollow. That’s not at all what is happening here, and I know it. It’s only been a handful of weeks, but every moment we spend together only makes me eager for more time with her.

I’m used to going after what I want. In business and with women. This arrangement with Sophie was no exception. Realizing I’m falling for her has me feeling off-balance. My confidence and charm are slipping, exposing an unfamiliar sensation…vulnerability.

I turn to glance at Sophie. Her once smiling face is now gaping in horror.

“Hunter,” Sophie whispers, her eyes widening at something behind me. “It’s Emma. Oh my God, she’s going to see you. Us. She’s going to seeus. You have to hide.”

Griffin walking in while Sophie was under my desk is one thing, but being caught together on a rowboat in Central Park, I’m far less concerned. Or maybe that’s what I want. To get caught. I’d be relieved. I’m tired of sneaking around. And while I’d prefer to talk to Griffin before he sees us together, I know the sooner that we address the issue, the easier it will be for me and Sophie to continue seeing each other.

I don’t want to be secret fuck buddies anymore. I want her to be mine.

“Where would you like me to go?” I laugh. “We’re in a boat.”

“Duck. Or here. Put on my hat.” She transfers her wide brim hat to my head.

“I’m not wearing your hat.” I take it off and deposit it back on her head.

“Shit. There’s Griffin.” She folds the brim of her hat to shield her face.

If I thought she looked flustered before, now she’s truly panicked.

“Let’s not panic. It’s going to be fine.”

“What are you talking about? If they see us, it’s going to be far from fine. How are we going to explain this?” She motions between us. “What are we going to say? That we’re taking a break from fucking to get some fresh air?”

She stands. Her head jerks around, like she’s looking for an emergency exit.

“Sophie, sit down.”
