My eyes fly open.What?

His words are shocking, considering his naked body is pressed against mine, his lips sweetly brushing over my bare shoulder.

“A break?” My brain swirls trying to understand, but I’m even more confused than I was before. My eyes widen. “Like Ross and Rachel ‘on a break’?”

He shakes his head, like he knows exactly what I’m talking about.

“No, not like Ross and Rachel. Like two people who are still very much exclusive, but need to take a minute and decide what they want out of this relationship.”

“Oh.” It’s all I can manage after the emotional rollercoaster of a day I’m having.

“You’re off work next weekend, right?” he asks.

“Yeah.” It’s a welcome break after working every weekend for the last month and a half.

“I’ll be back late Friday night. We can go for a run Saturday morning.”

I give him a small smile and nod.

He’s giving us a timeline. And I do love a good timeline.

“I need to get some work done before tomorrow. You want to stay? I can order in dinner.”

It sounds perfect, it’s what I want to do, but Hunter’s right, I need time to think about what I want outside of this moment.

I shake my head. “No, that’s okay. I’ve got some things to do, too.”

I roll myself out from beneath him and pull on my clothes, then pack up the overnight bag I brought.

“Hey,” he catches my wrist before I can leave. He pulls me into his bare chest. It’s quickly becoming my favorite place to be. It’s warm and cozy. Smells great. Makes me feel protected and safe. “Have a good week.” He presses a soft kiss to my lips.

“You, too,” I barely squeak out before I pull away and with the strongest smile I can muster, walk out Hunter’s front door.

In the elevator, I clutch my bag to my chest. Is this how the women onThe Bachelorfeel when they pack everything up before a rose ceremony, not knowing if they’ll be back again?

I push the thought away.

It’s a break. With his travel for work, I wouldn’t see him anyway.

When the elevator dings at the lobby, I straighten my shoulders and lift my chin before stepping off.

This week with Hunter out of town will be good, I reassure myself. A break from him will give me some time to figure out what I want. It will help me gain some perspective, because I need it, desperately.

CHAPTER29

Hunter

In the past, I’ve enjoyed my visits to Las Vegas. Extravagant dinners, gambling, women. It’s all at your fingertips. Being here now, I feel anxious and the only thing I like about Las Vegas is that I found Sophie here.

The Vegas Strip is like a miniature New York City in that it never sleeps. Inside the casinos, it could be five in the morning or five in the evening, there’s no way to tell for sure until you step outside.

That’s where I find myself, waiting for Griffin so we can go to dinner.

I pull out my phone again to check my messages. There are sixty-two there, but none are the one I want.

“Hey.” Griffin appears at my side. “That was a long meeting.”

His tie and suit jacket are gone now, just like mine.
