“I was helping Emma get ready for tonight.”

I run my hand through my hair. I feel like a lovesick teenager overanalyzing his crush’s every move.

“Barrett said Emma is setting you up with a guy tonight.”

Sophie’s brows lift. “That’s what this is about?”

I scowl thinking about the guy out on the deck. Tall, attractive, and from what I can tell, age-appropriate. “He looks like Clark Kent.”

She bites her lip, her eyes skimming the length of me until they meet mine. I can see the heat there. The way her pupils dilate. “You look like Clark Kent, minus the glasses.”

Her playful response puts me somewhat at ease.

I smirk, moving closer until I can reach out and pull her to me. My frustrations from earlier immediately settled by the feel of her in my arms. My lips lower to hers, tasting her for the first time in six days. When I left the city on Monday, I had no idea I’d miss her this much. Need her this much. Or maybe I knew all along that this woman was changing everything.

“Does that make me Superman?” I ask against her ear as I rock my pelvis into hers.

She gasps before her breathy response. “You just need the red cape.”

“Does that make you Lois Lane?” I move my hand beneath her skirt, letting my hand settle between her thighs, over her silk panties. I can feel the heat of her on the palm of my hand, the dampness that gathers there when I rub the heel of my hand against her. My cock throbs with the need to be inside her. I want to spread her out, kiss every inch of her body. Take my time and make love to her. I’m so fucking gone for this girl. “Or my fucking kryptonite?” I growl.

She shivers against me, but then stills my hand.

“Hunter, wait. We need to talk.”

Her trembling voice registers and I extract my hand from beneath her skirt.

“I know. Sorry, I got distracted.” I press my forehead against hers and breathe in her scent. “Fuck. Okay. Let’s talk.”

I expect her to pull away, but she flings herself at me. Her arms pull tighter around my neck, her face nuzzling against my chest as she melts into my arms. Nothing has ever felt so good.

“I missed you,” she says.

She missed me.

I was wrong. Sophie’s words are even better.

“I missed you, too, baby.” I kiss the top of her head, holding her there.

But as I hold her, I can feel the tremble of her body against mine.

She’s nervous. Unsure.

I want to make it crystal clear how I feel about her.

“I do want to end our arrangement.” At my words, Sophie sucks in an audible gasp. “I don’t want to keep doing what we’ve been doing. No more secret hookups. I want to take you out. I want you on my arm at events. I want you, Sophie. I know we agreed to keep this a secret, but I can’t do that anymore. I need the whole world to know how I feel about you.”

She pulls back to look up at me, her eyes filled with emotion. “How do you feel about me?” she asks.

“Sophie, I—”

Before I can confess my feelings, a loud commotion from the hallway has us pulling apart.

SOPHIE

The loud thud in the hallway pulls my attention from Hunter. From what he was about to say.
