But then she starts to cry.

“You’re right. I’m never going to have my own apartment. I’ll never live alone.” She shakily sucks in air through her tears.

“Shh. Hey. We’ll figure it out,” I say soothingly. “I’ll take the baby to the lake house for a weekend and you can pretend you live in the condo by yourself. Maybe not right away, but at some point.”

“You’d do that?” she whispers through her tears.

I’d do just about anything to make her happy. To show her how much she means to me. How much I want us to be a family.

“Sophie, I want to make you happy. I want you to feel supported. If me time is what you need, then that’s what you’ll get.”

“I just didn’t expect this. The baby. You. None of it was in the five-year plan.”

“I know.” I rub her back. It wasn’t in my five-year plan either. Hell, I don’t have a five-year plan. Besides work to anchor me, I’d been floating through life. Now that I have Sophie, and the prospect of being a dad, I can see the years laid out before me.

Our wedding, family vacations. I can even imagine walking our child into their first day of kindergarten. One tiny hand in mine, the other one in Sophie’s. At that point, there might be another baby, maybe two. I know I’m getting ahead of myself, but what once was impossible to imagine, now I can’t stop coloring in the details of the life that I want with Sophie.

CHAPTER33

Sophie

I roll over in bed, pulling the covers up under my chin. My body is sluggish and my head hurts. The moment my eyes open, I remember.

I’m pregnant.

I close my eyes again. It still doesn’t feel real.

“Good morning.” I follow the sound of Hunter’s voice to the doorway.

My stomach flutters at the sight of him walking toward me. How gorgeous he is with his thick, dark hair, stunning indigo eyes, and hypnotizing smile. Seeing him has me wondering what our baby is going to look like. What characteristics he or she will have of mine, and which ones they’ll get from their dad.

His reaction to the news yesterday was everything. Finding out I was pregnant was shocking, but knowing that Hunter was supportive and even excited gave me a sense of calm. It allowed the sliver of excitement I was feeling to expand, right before Griffin’s response to the news crushed it.

Hunter is dressed in running shorts and a t-shirt. I’m not even annoyed he went running without me. There’s no way I would have gotten out of this bed earlier. He’s got a plastic bag in one hand and glass of water in the other.

He sets the bag and water on the nightstand, then sits down on the edge of the bed, his palm starting to rub soothing circles on my back.

“Hi.” I give him a small smile, trying to blink the sleep out of my eyes.

“How’d you sleep?” he asks.

“Okay. It took me a while to fall asleep. Lots going on in my brain.” I sigh and rub my temples. “And now I have a headache.”

He offers me the glass of water. “You probably need to drink more water. Your body is increasing its blood supply and water is important.”

“How do you know that?” I ask, sitting up so I can drink.

“I ran out and got some books.”

“And you already read them?”

“I’m a quick study.” He winks and I can’t help but melt a little.

“I also got these.” He pulls a bottle from the bag.

Prenatal vitamins.

He opens the bottle and hands me two capsules. I swallow them down, then drain the rest of the water.
