“We all want that.” Chloe moves to my other side, wrapping her arms around both of us, a difficult feat for her petite size.

“Thank you.” I sniffle.

Emma hands me a tissue and I wipe at the tears streaming down my face. It feels amazing to have these two women rallying around me, but I can’t help but wonder if in my desire to prove my independence, I ended up pushing Griffin too far away.

Monday morning, I go straight to Johnathan’s office.

“Hey.”

“Good morning. How was your weekend?” he asks.

“Um, it was eventful.”

“Yeah? Your drive-by of my party on Friday was interesting.” He eyes me with suspicion. “Want to tell me what was going on?”

“I feel bad. It slipped my mind and then I was in a weird headspace when I was there.”

“No kidding. I wanted to introduce you to Beau, but you were in and out quicker than a man with no foreplay skills.”

I smile at Johnathan’s comparison, but I feel bad that I didn’t get the chance to meet his husband.

“I’m sorry,” I hand him the pastry bag I’m holding. “I didn’t have time to grab you a coffee, but I can go make you one in the break room.”

“You’re forgiven.” He waves me off. “No coffee necessary as long as this is a chocolate croissant.”

I smile when he opens the bag and his face lights up.

He pulls the flaky pastry from the bag and takes a bite, the chocolate filling oozing out.

Damn, I should have gotten one for myself.

“I need your advice.”

“Is this a bribe?” He chews a bite. “Because I can’t give any help on your internship project, if that’s what you’re looking for. I’m supposed to be unbiased and subjective.”

“I’m pregnant.” The words tumble past my lips.

He’s midbite when his eyes go wide and he makes a choking sound.

“Oh, no. Are you okay?” I stand to help, but he motions me to sit.

After a coughing fit, he reaches for his water bottle. A minute later, he gives a final cough before he speaks.

“Honey, don’t deliver shocking news while someone’s eating a flaky pastry. The tiny flakes of buttery crust went down the wrong pipe.” He takes another drink of water and clears his throat before eyeing me. “That’s exciting?”

It’s a question because I’m not exactly radiating enthusiasm.

“It’s a surprise, that’s for sure.”

“And the father?”

All I have to do is nod because Johnathan knows about Hunter. Or at least he has suspected since the flowers.

His jaw drops. “You’re having Hunter Cartwright’s baby?!”

I glance toward his door. “Shh.”
