“Do you have the night off?” I ask.

“We had our final performance for the season a few weeks ago.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize,” I say. “I guess everyone needs time off. I’m sure it’s a lot of strain on your body.”

“We take a break every summer after the spring session ends to prep for the fall season.”

“Lettie is trying out for a lead role in the fall session,” Hannah offers.

“Lettie?” I question.

“That’s my nickname,” she responds.

“Oh, that’s lovely. And exciting about the lead role. I’m sure you’ll get it.”

Colette’s smile tightens slightly. “We’ll see.”

A waiter approaches with a tray of champagne flutes filled with bubbly.

“For you, Miss.” He hands me a flute from the tray.

“Um,” I stutter. Other than diverting June from a happy hour earlier this week, this is the first time I’m in public and having to deal with the fact that I can’t drink alcohol. Like this entire pregnancy thing, I didn’t prepare for this moment.

Hunter leans in, brushing my hair off my shoulder. “That one is just for you,” he whispers discreetly before pressing a kiss to my jaw.

I nod to the waiter and accept the drink. Upon tasting, it’s obvious that it’s sparkling grape juice.

Thank you, I mouth to Hunter, knowing he must have arranged the drink switch ahead of time. He’s the most thoughtful, dirty-talking, ass-spanking man there is. My chest tightens and my pussy clenches. My body equally swooning and lusting after this man. I fight the urge to leap into his arms and maul him; instead, I focus on the conversation around me.

“We spent summers together at Lake George,” Hannah offers. “Our families have neighboring houses there.”

“That’s right. Hunter mentioned that.”

Hannah beams, glancing between Hunter and me.

“Summers at Lake George are some of my fondest childhood memories,” Colette says with a whimsical look on her face.

“Oh my God, do you remember when you were begging your parents for a cat and Rhys gave you one, only come to find out he stole it from the elderly couple a few houses down?” Hannah shakes her head, laughing.

“My first pet cat.” Colette turns to me. “Only lasted for six hours before the owners knocked on our door and took her away.”

“How heartbreaking, but Rhys probably shouldn’t have taken someone else’s cat,” I say.

“No, he shouldn’t have, but Rhys was always compelled to do whatever it took to make Colette happy.” Hannah’s lips twitch, recalling the memory.

“We were good friends,” Colette counters. “He was like a brother to me. Same as Hunter.”

“Sure, sure.” Hannah doesn’t sound convinced.

“Doesn’t matter now. He’s not the guy he used to be.”

After a thoughtful pause, the conversation moves on.

Later, we peruse the auction items, then make our way to the bar. I thank the bartender for my soda water with lime while Hunter accepts his scotch on the rocks.

God, he looks incredible in a suit. The way his fingers grip his glass. His hair is styled in that perfectly disheveled way that looks like I could run my hands through it while he sucks on my clit and no one would even know. I didn’t know I could be even more attracted to him than I already was.

These pregnancy hormones are something. It’s like they’re in the driver’s seat and I’m just along for the ride.
