He kisses me thoroughly before taking my hand and leading me out the door. At least I’m feeling more relaxed now, that is, until we walk back into the ballroom and right into Emma and Griffin.

Emma’s face lights with surprise, but she recovers quickly and pulls me into a hug.

“Hi! You look gorgeous,” she says. “I love that dress.”

“Thank you. You look stunning.” I lean into her warm embrace.

I knew there was a chance they would be here. They’re in the same social circle, and Emma is designing Hannah’s wedding gown, but I wasn’t prepared for this moment. Seeing them out socially when things are strained between me and Griffin.

While Emma pulls Hunter in for a hug, I glance at Griffin. He’s studying something over my shoulder, not meeting my eyes.

Hunter releases Emma, then wraps his arm around my waist to pull me in close to his side. I’d normally love the feeling of his hands on me, but under Griffin’s unhappy gaze, I feel deflated.

“Griffin, good to see you, man.” Hunter sticks out his hand for a shake, but Griffin doesn’t move his hands from his pockets.

Instead, he gives Hunter a terse nod, then grunts. I’ve never seen him do that in my life.

It’s giving fuck-off Roy Kent vibes. Johnathan would be thoroughly impressed.

Hunter retracts his hand slowly, and the awkwardness hanging between our foursome ratchets up to a ten.

“Well, it’s so good to see both of you. I think we’re going to go browse the auction items.” It’s impossible to miss the terse look she aims at Griffin before she gives me a sympathetic smile and they turn to leave.

The whole encounter is an out of body experience. As I watch them walk away, my heart sinks.

Part of me thought we’d see each other and everything would be fine. I’ve never fought with Griffin.

But maybe that’s the problem, growing up we were always on our best behavior, trying to make the others’ life easier in the situation we were in. And everything is changing now.

“Does he hate me now?” I ask.

“Hey,” Hunter catches my chin with his finger. “He could never hate you. Give him some time. It’s only been a couple of days.”

“Hello?” I point to my belly. “I’m still processing over here and it’s happening to me.”

“I know,” he kisses me gently. “Do you want to go process at home in bed?”

“Yes.” I nod, excited to take off this dress and stretch out on Hunter’s king-size bed.

On the way home, Emma texts me.

Emma:I’m sorry that was awkward. Griffin isn’t handling this well.

Sophie:Yeah, I know he and I need to talk but tonight was not the time.

Emma:How are you feeling? I didn’t want to ask at the event.

Sophie:Okay. Bloated and tired. I’m going to the doctor on Friday.

Emma:I hope you can get some rest. And that everything goes well at the doctor. Will you let me know how it goes?

Sophie:Of course.

Emma:Sweet dreams!

Sophie:Have a good night.

When I finally climb into bed, my body is exhausted, but my brain is swirling with thoughts. Griffin, my pregnancy and upcoming doctor’s appointment, my internship and future career. Not to mention all the logistics and financial burdens of having a baby.
