She smiles. “I’m glad you went with your gut.”

“Me, too.”

That afternoon, I leave Marion Adler Events for the last time. My time here was nothing like I expected, but everything I needed.

CHAPTER40

Hunter

“I can’t decide on the napkins. White would look pretty with my centerpiece, but the dark blue is also nice. It contrasts with the blush and rose-colored flowers.”

“They both look great.” I wrap my arms around Sophie's waist from behind and place my hands on her growing belly. She’s sixteen weeks now and has the most adorable bump that I can’t help but constantly touch.

She sighs, leaning into me. “That’s not helpful.”

“It’s a nacho bar with queso and salsa, so let’s go with the blue.”

Suddenly she stiffens, and gasps. “The queso!”

I follow her into the kitchen, but we don’t find burnt queso, we find Emma there stirring it while Griffin pulls out a bowl for the chips. My dad’s whipping up a batch of guacamole while my mom is perfecting a non-alcoholic margarita recipe.

She hands a glass to Sophie. “I added more lime. Let me know what you think.”

Sophie takes a sip and nods. “Delicious.”

Since Sophie has settled into my place—our place—we decided to have our friends and family over for dinner to announce the sex of our babies. She’s been craving Mexican food lately, so a nacho bar made sense.

Sunday dinner is a new tradition that Griffin and Sophie decided to start when they patched things up after our dating and pregnancy news came out a few months ago.

“Remember, I’m the one in charge here today.”

Her lips relax, and a smile pulls at the corners. “Okay, that’s kind of a turn-on.”

I smile and gently pat her ass. Everything turns her on right now.

“Save it for later, baby,” I press a kiss to her lips.

My parents—okay, mostly my mom because she’s crazy about babies—were over the moon when Sophie and I told them we were expecting. My mom cried and then promptly took up knitting so she could make baby blankets for the twins. It’s something she says she wished she had done for me and Hannah. Her text updates on the progress of said blankets are downright comical.

Hannah and James were happy for us, too. Though Hannah had a moment of panic when she wondered if Sophie was due around the time of her wedding. She’d want us to be there of course. Luckily, Sophie’s guess date is months in advance of Hannah’s wedding. That’s hard to believe. That the babies will be here before Hannah and James get married.

After we eat, Sophie and I go into the kitchen to get the cookies we had made at the local bakery where I get my cookie decorating kits. We gave the owner, Marjorie, an envelope with the babies’ sexes in it and asked her to make some sprinkle-filled cookies to help us make our announcement.

“Are you nervous?” I ask Sophie.

“A little. Up to this point, it’s been fun to daydream about either scenario. Now, we’ll know for sure.”

“We don’t have to know. We could just toss these cookies out and be surprised.”

“First, that’s a terrible waste of cookies. Second, I said I was nervous, not terrified. We’re going to find out.”

“That’s my girl.” I press a kiss to her cheek.

With our family and a few of our close friends gathered, we each break into a cookie to find pink sprinkles.

“We’re having girls!” Sophie exclaims, leaping into my arms so that the sprinkles go flying everywhere. I think she was secretly hoping for girls, but she didn’t want to voice it.

“Congratulations, man.” Griffin pulls me in for a hug. “Baby girls. That’s going to be a heck of a ride.”
