“I said heck.” I practically growl, which is nothing I would normally do. That’s how frustrating this conversation is.

“I know. Fuck would have been preferable. Don’t worry, when we’re done, you’ll be using a variety of four-letter words.”

“Done with what?” I ask, my eyes narrowing.

“Dating. You and me.”

I can’t help it, a cynical laugh bursts from my lips. But Rhys isn’t deterred.

“I need a woman like you on my arm to show my grandfather I can keep my dick in my pants and commit to a,” he waves his hand up and down my body, “nice, boring woman.”

I’m not surprised by his grandfather’s demand. Rhys’s run through women has been a headline for years and not the good kind.

“You’re not selling this very well. What do I get in return?” I ask.

“Being on my arm will get Nathan to notice you.”

“But if we’re dating—”

“Fake dating.” Rhys interjects. “We won’t actually be together.”

“Obviously.” Rhys is the last guy on Earth I could see myself dating for real. “If I appear to be taken, why would Nathan be interested in me?”

Rhys’s lips pull up at the corners, he looks like the Cheshire cat. “You’re adorable.”

“You’re infuriating. Answer the question.”

“Guys like Nathan want what they think they can’t have. He’ll see you as a challenge. And being my girlfriend, the first woman that I’ve ever been serious about, will make him wonder what it is about you that locked down a bachelor like me. It’s genius.”

“For how long?” I ask.

He shrugs. “A few months. Until my thirtieth birthday.”

“And datingmeis going to make your grandfather think you’ve changed your ways?” I ask, my voice oozing skepticism.

He smirks. “If prim and proper Colette Davenport can’t convince him, no one can.”

His words are a reminder. We are two completely different people.

I want to experience real love and he wants to trick his grandfather into thinking he’s settling down.

This is bananas. I shake my head. “It’ll never work.”

“Why?”

“How will we convince your grandfather and Nathan, and the whole world that we’re really together? That we’reattractedto each other? Twenty minutes ago, you told me there was nothing sexy about me.”

He eyes me carefully.

“We’ll work on that.”

“How?” I need to know the specifics. That Rhys has an actual plan. I’m not going to tie myself to him without knowing the details. I want evidence this hair-brained scheme of his could actually work.

“I’ll teach you how to dress better, we’ll work on body language, flirting, how to get a guy’s attention and keep it.”

“Kissing and touching?” I wince.

He shrugs. “We’ll have to do it in public.”
