“Shh. Don’t ruin it.” He chews then washes it down with another sip of his drink. “I’m loving the breakfast delivery, but like I said yesterday, everyone makes mistakes.”

I smile. “I appreciate your understanding and I’m grateful Hannah and James did sign the contract, but I keep thinking it could have gone differently, and I’m sorry for that. I want to assure you that I only had the best intentions and nothing like this will ever happen again.”

“What won’t happen again? A one-night stand or you accusing your one-night stand of cheating on his sister?” He chuckles. “If I hadn’t been worried about the account, I would have been recording you, and put that shit up on YouTube. It was like watching a runaway train you knew was going to derail but there was no way of stopping it.”

I wince. “Yeah, not my finest moment.”

“It’s all good. And not only did Hannah and James sign the contract, but Hannah sent me a note this morning.” He motions to his computer. “She invited us to the soft launch of her new SoHo jewelry store tomorrow night.”

“Oh, wow. That’s great.”

“While I wouldn’t normally dictate how you spend your time outside of work hours, I think after everything yesterday, the best course of action would be for us to go.”

Johnathan gives me a knowing look. I wonder if Hunter will be there. My stomach dips with nervous anticipation. Maybe it’ll be a good thing to see him and clear the air. Thank him for the flowers.

And Johnathan’s right. I feel so bad about yesterday, so showing up at Hannah’s posh jewelry event is the least I can do to smooth things over.

He sets the drink on his desk, then studies me. “I couldn’t help but notice the stunning arrangement of flowers on your desk when I walked by the intern office this morning.”

“They’re from Hunter.”

One corner of his mouth curves up. “I had a feeling.”

“It’s not what you think.” I rush to correct any idea he has that me and Hunter are a thing. “He sent them to apologize for the misunderstanding. That’s all.”

He shrugs. “If you say so, but I was there. I felt the tension crackling between you two.”

I give him a tight smile.

“I know what you’re talking about. It was like that in Vegas, but for the next three months, this internship is my priority.”

“That’s probably best.” He dusts scone crumbs from his hands, his smile widening. “Okay, I’ve got a project for you.”

My face lights. “Yeah?”

“Favors for the Delancey-Kilgore wedding.”

“Oh, fun!”

He smirks. “Don’t get too excited. I’ve given them a million options already, and they’ve hated everything. My notes are in their file. Put together three new ideas and have them to me by Friday.”

My brain is already cranking, ready to attempt the challenge. “Okay.” I nod, excitedly.

“But first, we’ve got to break the news to the Bradshaw-Gonzales’ that the floral centerpieces they want are going to cost twice as much due to a flower shortage. I’ve already got back up options, but we’ll need another appointment with the florist to finalize everything.”

After the phone call with the Bradshaw-Gonzales,’ which goes well due to Johnathan’s smooth talking, I return to my desk to get started on the wedding favor project.

When I get back to the intern office, June’s chair is empty. She must be out at a meeting.

My phone has several new texts from Coco, who lost her mind when I told her that I ran into Hunter yesterday. While she’s certain it’s kismet, I’m convinced yesterday was a stroke of bad luck.

My eyes shift to the arrangement of flowers from Hunter.

They’re wildflowers. An arrangement of some of my favorites. White button chrysanthemums, snap dragons, Lily of the Incas and goldenrod. It’s a coincidence, because there’s no way he would know that from our one night together, but it makes me smile just the same.

Before I get distracted thinking about Hunter again, I shift my focus to my computer and get to work.
