“I love you.”

“Love you, too.” I disconnect the call and pocket my phone.

Over my right shoulder, I hear my name.

“Hunter. Hey, man, I thought that was you. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

I turn to my right to find one of my old Princeton rowing buddies, Connor Whitlock.

“Connor, hey.” I lean in and clap him on the back. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Alice’s parents are watching the kids, so we’re having a date night. She wanted to stop by to see Hannah’s opening, and then we’re off to dinner and a show.”

Alice appears at Connor’s side. “Okay, I’ve picked out my birthday presents.” She motions toward the case she was previously standing at before she glances over at me. “Hunter,” her eyes light with surprise. “Oh my goodness, it’s been ages.” She wraps me in a hug. “I wasn’t sure if you’d be here. What’s new with you?”

Before I can answer, Alice continues talking.

“Oh, I saw that article last year. Your dad retired and now you’re Premier’s CEO. Congratulations.”

“Thank you,” I say, taking a drink.

“I’m sure the article declaring you to be the city’s wealthiest CEO bachelor was a hit with the ladies. Anyone here with you tonight?” She scans the surrounding vicinity.

“No. Just me here supporting Hannah.”

“Oh, that’s nice,” Alice says.

I scan the room, looking for Hannah, and that’s when I seeher.

Across the room, by one of the jewelry cases, is Sophie.

She’s flanked by Johnathan and another guy. They’re sipping on cocktails while they talk and peruse the jewelry.

If I thought she was off limits before, discovering Sophie is Griffin’s sister should have put an end to me thinking about her, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case. If anything, she’s consumed my thoughts even more.

The group next to them shifts, blocking my view of Sophie.

“I’m going to look for Hannah. It was great to see you two.”

I say my goodbyes, then make my way across the room. I should find Hannah, but my feet have me moving in Sophie’s direction.

Johnathan sees me first.

“Hunter Cartwright.” A huge smile takes over his face. “Nice to see you again.”

“Johnathan.” I nod, then shift my gaze to Sophie. “Sophie.” Her name slips past my lips in a husky tone.

She’s dressed in wide leg pants and a snug tank top that accentuates her full breasts and her trim waist.

“This is Marco Diaz.” Johnathan introduces me to the man next to Sophie. I’ve barely shook his hand when Johnathan guides him away. “And we were just going to grab another drink.”

Sophie’s mouth falls open, likely to protest, but Johnathan and Marco are gone before she can get a word out.

My gaze catalogs her features. The blonde curtain of silk framing her face, those responsive green eyes fixed on me. Lush pink lips wrapped around the straw of her drink.

“Hannah invited us.”

One corner of my lips pulls up. “I think that’s why we’re all here.”
