But, in addition to my affinity for checklists, and the creativity and patience that it takes to be a wedding planner, I love love. I want it for myself one day. One day being a good five and a half years from now, because I’ve got shit to do. First and foremost, take the New York City wedding planning scene by storm.

Besides, as Johnathan alluded to earlier, this internship is going to be my life for the next three months, and I need it to be the priority.

“Good. I had an intern a few years back who was a marriage cynic.” He rolls his eyes. “He thought it was trendy or something. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but a wedding planner who doesn’t believe in marriage is like a sports team manager who hopes their team loses every game. It’s like when Rebecca wanted Ted and the team to fail in season one.”

“Ted?”

“Lasso.”

“Oh, right.”

“That show is everything. Jason Sudeikis…the khakis, the mustache. Not a lot of men can pull that off, am I right? But the main reason I love it is because Roy Kent is my new hall pass. I switched from Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia inThe Witcher. I’ve kind of got a grumpy asshole thing going on now, which is odd because my husband is the sweetest man. I can’t understand it, but there’s just something about a growly, emotionally unavailable bearded man that does it for me.”

I laugh at Johnathan’s obvious enthusiasm for the television show as we continue down the hallway.

“You don’t have to be a fan, but please note, I won’t be accepting any criticism.”

“What are you known for?” I ask, not realizing until the words are out that they’re bold.

“That’s easy. I’ll cry like a baby when the bride finds the right dress and always advocate for the couple during vendor negotiations, but I’m just as quick to give it to them straight when they’ve lost sight of what is important, each other and their marriage.”

I smile, because even in the minutes I’ve known him, I can see that about Johnathan. Loyal, but firm with a bit of sass.

He shows me how to use the coffee machine in the breakroom and the lounge where staff meetings are held.

After a quick stop at his office to go over his expectations, he shows me to the intern office.

Located between the two office wings, the intern office is a large space with desks paired together. Our arrival has the persons already at their desks turning to look. Meeting new people has always been easy for me. But with everyone’s eyes on me, my stomach flips.

“Everyone, this is Sophie. She’s an intern with the wedding division and will be working with me.”

A few of the other interns nod or wave in my direction, and I give them a beaming smile and wave back.

“This is your desk.” Johnathan motions to an open desk with three drawers on the side, a computer monitor and keyboard. It’s the placard mounted to the side of the desk with my name on it that gives me the biggest thrill.

“This is June.” He motions to the woman at the desk adjoining mine. Her black hair is cut in an angled bob with fringe bangs and pouty red lips. She stands to greet me. Her black silk blouse and fitted black skirt make her look edgy, but at the same time polished. I’m suddenly feeling inadequate in the emerald-green shift dress I spent weeks picking out for my first day. “She’s Cyrus’s intern, event planning division.” He motions to his head. “He’s bald and a little bit bitchy.”

I nod, trying to remember the people I’ve met or been told about in the last ten minutes.

“Hi, I’m Sophie Hart.” I shake her hand and her lips pull into a smile.

“June Lee. Welcome to internship desk-land,” she jokes, motioning to the sea of desks around us. The intimidation I had felt a moment ago subsides with her friendly smile and easygoing attitude.

“Thanks! I’m excited to be here,” I say.

Johnathan hands me a sheet of paper. It’s a schedule. My schedule. My Type A, organized brain squeals with delight.

“Pardon the archaic print out. By the end of the day, you’ll be set up in the system and your schedule will be on your computer, tablet, and phone.”

I glance over the schedule while Johnathan continues.

“All the interns have a meet-and-greet with Marion at nine-thirty, then I’m going to walk you through some of the weddings that I’m currently working on. We need to do a few site visits, then we’ve got a consultation lunch appointment at Delphino’s at twelve-thirty, so you’ll get to see how it all begins.” He waves his hands excitedly and I can’t help but share his passion.

“Get settled in, then I’ll see you after the meeting with Marion.”

A wave of nausea rolls over me. Ugh. I need to get this stomach thing under control.

“Sure thing.”
