After I drop the tablets with Will, I stand and take in the view for a moment. While I’m standing there, a woman mistakes me for a waitress and hands me her empty glass. I’m in a simple black dress and heels, but compared to the other women in gowns, my outfit screams waitress, not attendee. I drop her glass off at the bar, then start to make my way toward the exit.

I’m almost outside when a strong hand grips my arm and pulls me sideways into an alcove between the event room and the exit.

My mouth is open, ready to scream, when I see that it’s Hunter.

“What the hell?” My words are sharp, but being this close to him, in this small space, makes my body soften. “You don’t sneak up on a woman, especially one that has been catching up on the last season ofUp and Vanished.”

“You didn’t respond.” He rubs his hand along his jaw, but his eyes stay locked on mine as his brow furrows. “What’sUp and Vanished?”

I attempt to not fall under his spell by staring at his ears. Ears aren’t sexy, right? Wrong. Everything about this man turns me into a puddle.

“It’s a podcast about unsolved disappearances.Womenwho have disappeared.”

His smile causes crinkles at the corner of his eyes. “And you’re listening to that because?”

“It’s interesting and it helps me unwind after a busy day.”

He presses his lips together in amusement. “Yeah, it sounds relaxing.”

“And it gives good tips on how to be safe and aware of your surroundings.”

“That’s very important. Especially in a big city.”

“It never warned about hot businessmen lurking in dark alcoves.”

He smirks at that. “You think I’m hot?”

I scoff. “I’m leaving now.”

He takes a step back, following my move, but he’s still blocking the exit. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“So as long as I didn’t know you and Allison would be here canoodling, everything is cool?”

He smiles. “Canoodling? You sound like my grandmother.”

“Your grandmother must be in her eighties, so I don’t think that’s a compliment.”

“My grandmother is very spirited. You two would get along great.”

“Too bad I’ll never meet her.”

“Hmm. That is too bad.” He slides a hand around my back to pull me closer.

Our bodies align and for a moment I’m completely intoxicated by Hunter. I luxuriate in the way his hard body feels pressed against mine. The way one whiff of his spicy cologne makes my panties damp. Then I push his hand away and start moving toward the alcove exit.

“I’ll let you get back to your date.”

CHAPTER15

Hunter

“It’s not a real date. It’s a favor,” I tell Sophie as I reach for her wrist to keep her in this private space with me. “Hannah asked me to come with her friend.”

She turns back to look at me.

“And you agreed out of the kindness of your heart?” she asks.

“I think I’m a nice guy, but no, I got something in return.”
