“Just to make sure we’re clear, I fully expect to make it out on the boat. I’m not just going to be your sexual plaything while we’re here.”

“Okay, but can I be yours?” He wiggles his brows.

“Hmm. Only if you promise to fuck me in the ass.” The moment the words are out of my mouth, I can’t believe I said them. It’s a reference to one of our previous text exchanges, but I didn’t know until this moment that I wanted him to do it this weekend.

Hunter’s eyes light up. “Seriously?”

I shrug, deciding that while there’s vulnerability in admitting what I want, I also feel safe with Hunter. “We talked about it before and I’m curious.”

“Do you have any idea how irresistible you are?” he asks.

“You’re just excited about my ass.”

He nips at my jaw. “Who wouldn’t be?”

“But before there’s any ass play, I need food.”

“I wouldn’t dream of doing anal on an empty stomach.”

“You’re ridiculous.” I shove him playfully, finding it impossible to look away from his charismatic smile.

He lifts me up and leads me into the kitchen where he pulls out a prepared cheeseboard from the refrigerator. I’m just about to dig in when we hear a sound at the front door, and a moment later, voices are echoing off the high-vaulted entryway to where we are in the kitchen.

“The gardener did a beautiful job with the flowers out front. They’re exactly what that space needed. Don’t you think so, Marshall?”

“Sure, sure,” a man responds as I hear luggage wheels rolling against the marble-tiled entryway.

“Fuck.” Hunter groans under his breath, moving away from the cheeseboard on the counter.

“Is that—” I start.

“My parents,” Hunter finishes.

My eyes widen in shock. “Are you serious? I thought they were out of town?”

“Yeah, that’s what they said.”

“Oh, is someone here?” the woman calls. No, notthe woman…Hunter’s mother.

A flash of panic seizes me. I look around for somewhere to hide. A closet, a cupboard. Anything will do. I could probably smoosh myself against the wall behind the drapes. I’d have to turn my feet out so they don’t see them peeking out, but under the circumstances, I’m sure I could manage.

As I glance hesitantly back and forth between my options, more questions arise.

How long will I have to hide?

Will Hunter distract them so he can sneak me out the back door and take me back to the city?

I think about the four-hour drive we just made.

As long car rides go, it was a blast. It was fun to tease Hunter and make him listen to Taylor Swift as well as a few episodes of the new true crime podcast I’ve been into lately, but my achy muscles cry at the thought of getting back in the car right now. Not to mention, I really wanted to go out on the boat. I glance longingly at the cheeseboard. And try that smoked Gouda.

My eyes are still ping-ponging between the kitchen pantry and the dining room drapes when I realize the decision has been made for me because Hunter’s mom is already in the kitchen doorway.

“Hunter, I didn’t know you were here.” Her eyes light at the sight of me frozen in place by the cheeseboard. “And with a guest.”

Hunter embraces his mom, then releases her to move toward me.

“Mom, this is Sophie.” Hunter slides one large palm around my lower back until it finds a resting place on my hip, and he pulls me close. Internally, I scowl. If Mr. Handsy over here could keep it in check, I could have said I was the cleaning lady.
