"Look," Atwell says, breaking the silence that has settled between us.

"I'm sorry for what must happen next. It's just business."

"Business?" I scoff, trying to mask the terror that threatens to consume me.

"You call killing me business?"

"Unfortunately, yes." He shrugs indifferently, but there's a flicker in his eyes that hints at something more.

"In my line of work, sometimes people get hurt."

"Anthony doesn't care about me anymore," I say, desperation seeping into my voice.

"Hurting me won't make any difference to him."

I lie. Maybe lying would work.

"I was just trying to use his name to scare you."

Atwell studies my face for a moment, seemingly considering my words.

But then he shakes his head, an unsettling smile appearing on his lips.

"Nice try, Diana. But we both know that's not true."

"Please," I whisper, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes.

"You don't have to do this."

"Unfortunately, I do," he replies, the apology in his tone clashing with the coldness in his eyes.

"You're a pawn in a game much larger than yourself, and I have my reasons."

I swallow hard, my heart pounding painfully in my chest.

If Anthony no longer caring for me won't save me, what will?

How can I possibly escape this nightmare?

"Please," I whisper one last time, knowing that it's futile but unable to stop myself.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Anthony still cares about you, Diana," Atwell insists, his voice devoid of any emotion.

"And that's why hurting you will make a difference."

I try to process what he's saying, but my mind is spinning with fear and confusion.

"Anthony's father had my wife and son killed," Atwell continues, his words chilling me to the bone.

"Do you really think I could have a better revenge? Don Giovanni's wife is dead, and you're the closest thing to a wife in that family."

My heart skips a beat at the horror I've just heard.

"Wh... what?" I say, shaking my head.

"I'm so sorry."
