"And taken care of means?" I hesitantly ask.

"Depends. He might be killed, or he might be able to work something out with my father. It just depends on why my father ended our contract with him. I suspect there's a personal reason behind it. My father doesn't generally allow a good business contract to end if it is mutually beneficial."

"What personal matter could make him end the contract then?" I can't imagine he has high morals given what I know so far.

"Honestly, up until that point, I didn't think there would be anything that would make him end the contract. He's spent a lot of money on Atwell, but Atwell has also taken out threats and competition against us, making my father just as much. Not to mention keeping him out of prison with dead witnesses. It's possible Atwell tried to blackmail my father."

"Wouldn't that be a bit more like mutual shared destruction though? The hitman is going to rat out the mafia don?" I ask skeptically. I have to imagine Atwell would only end up in prison right along with Alonzo.

"And that's exactly it. It's why these types of relationships work because one can't rat on the other without getting tossed in prison themselves. Especially in Atwell's case. He's killed thousands of people all over the world. There isn't a single Federal Agency that would ever consider offering him Witness Protection. If he was trying to blackmail my father, it had to be for money. He must have had something on my father that he would be willing to pay good money to keep quiet."

"What would that be, though?" I have to imagine someone like Alonzo wouldn't have much he was ashamed of.

"No idea. Everyone knows he has no problem sleeping with nineteen-year-olds or married women. He's never been shy about his sexual conquests. He's even slept with the girlfriends of the guys that work for him. I mean, there's really nothing he won't do. Whatever the reason, I doubt we will ever discover what it is," he says with a small shrug.

He's probably right.

It doesn't really matter to me either way.

All that matters is that there's a hitman after Anthony and, by association, me.

It doesn't matter too much as to why because it won't change the situation.

It won't change that this is just further proof of how my marriage to Anthony is going to ruin my life.

I'm being dragged into his world of violence and death, and there's nothing I can do about it. Or maybe I can.

The number of Agent Miller flashes in my mind.

I've memorized his number just in case. I hadn't been planning on using it, but I wanted to have the number with me should the worst happen.

I think it's safe to say this is the worst-case scenario.

I could call him, and maybe he could get me out of this.

Maybe I don't have to go through with this marriage, and this shooting is my ticket out.

After all, who's going to question if I ran away after having a hitman targeting me?

The others would just assume that was why I ran, and with Anthony having to go into hiding himself, by the time they have the chance to even start to look for me, I could be long gone.

Huh, look at that, I found the bright side to my situation.

Chapter 8

Anthony

Irollmyneckfor what feels like the hundredth time.

Sleeping on that couch last night was not fun.

I think it might have been more comfortable on the floor.

Most would have said too bad and slept in the bed with Diana, but I don't want her thinking I'm like most guys.

I know she's attracted to me. I can see the heat within her eyes whenever I don't have my shirt on.

I feel her eyes on me when I walk away from her.
