Anthony laughs loudly, and smacks his hand on his thighs.
"True that, principesa. Truth be told, let's just say my father's the gold digger."
"Touché," I say, nodding seriously.
Although we're joking about our situation, the darkness behind the truth lingers in our minds.
I try to lighten the mood. "Who wouldn't want to be spoiled by a mafia prince?"
Anthony rolls his eyes, but I can see the fondness in them.
"You're impossible."
"But seriously," I say, my tone turning serious.
"What would you have done if I turned out to be someone you couldn't trust?"
Anthony's expression turns somber. "I don't know," he admits.
"I try not to think about it. But I do know that I would have done everything in my power to protect myself from any harm."
I nod, the weight of his words settling heavily on my chest.
"And now?"
"I will do everything in my power to protect you from harm," he says, gently.
My heart melts at his words and I can't help but lean in closer to him.
"Why?" I ask softly. "Why do all of this? Risking your life for me?"
Anthony takes a deep breath, his eyes locked onto mine.
"Because…," he says, his voice barely above a whisper.
"…I think I could fall in love with you."
My breath hitches in my throat.
It's like all the air has been sucked out of the room.
I stare at him, dumbfounded, trying to grasp the meaning of his words.
"I know it's crazy," he continues, his fingers lightly tracing circles on the back of my hand.
"I know it's not what you signed up for, and neither did I. But I can't help how I feel. And I wouldn't want anything else for you."
A lump forms in my throat at the sincerity in his voice.
My mind is in chaos, thoughts racing in every direction.
"Oh, Anthony..." I say, sighing.
"A future with you might not be the worst thing in the world for me, but your world is just so much. For now, can be please take it one step at a time?"
It hurts for me to ask this because, in my heart, I'm falling for him too.
But, I now have a baby to think about, and I'm willing to make whatever sacrifices to keep him or her safe - even if that sacrifice is Anthony.
