“The one you hid from me?”

“It’s full of deeds. Cyrus probably owns half of Fox Hollow.”

I make a sound in my throat. “At least.”

“Don’t you fucking get it, Reece? The same way he’s never going to give that business up, he’s never going to stop holding your sisters over your head. The only way to get out from under his thumb is to get out of Fox Hollow.”

“Cyrus doesn’t own you anymore and you’re still here.”

“He had to let me go. He’s a businessman first and foremost, and I paid my debt. I was only one person. You’re not. He wants your entire family and all the profit he’s currently making, and stands to make, off them. You guys need to leave. All of you. Soon. Now.”

I swallow hard, the sound deafening to my own ears.

“Would you come with?”

Her head whips my way. “What?”

“If I’m leaving, you should, too.”

“Don’t be an idi—”

“I’m dead fucking serious. We can leave Fox Hollow, and everyone in it, behind.”

She doesn’t answer right away as she studies something outside. There’s a dense gray fog weighing down the sky, an indication snow is on its way. If not tonight, soon. Very soon. We’re close enough to New York City and the Atlantic that we don’t get hit with as much snow as the rest of the state, but we do get some.

“Your sister thinks Fox Hollow can be saved. Flipped. Turned into something good.”

“My sister’s naïve.”

“Thanks to you. You’ve done a good job keeping her that way. Naiveté is a luxury I didn’t have growing up.”

“Let me take you away from it. All of it, even Kordin.”

“Isn’t it enough to get your mom and sisters out?”

My answer leaves my lips before I finish thinking it. “No.”

A few weeks ago it would’ve been enough. It would’ve been everything.

But now it’s not.

Lex breaks our connection to start the car, then we leave the same way we came in—silent.

Lex

“Can you at least come up?” Reece asks when we reach his apartment building like this was some sort of date gone wrong and he’s hoping to talk things out, smooth everything over.Rookie.

I pull alongside his black Alfa Romeo. “I need you to follow me.”

“For what?”

“To dump this,” I say impatiently.

Without another word, Reece gets out.

Watching him stalk over to his car, I release my grip on the steering wheel, my hands shaking uncontrollably. I can’t fucking stand to be in this Mustang another minute, but I have to get rid of it completely so it can’t be traced back to me in any way. Kordin has to be the one to get the call it’s missing, not the cops, so that he can concentrate on purchasing a replacement. For that, he’ll need his laptop.

At least that’s the hope.
