That bottom lip of his glistening from his tongue swiping left and right across it, Reece hesitates before giving a stiff nod.

Cat and I say bye to each other and she gives me a silentI hope you know what you’re doinglook before she leaves.

I open my lips to speak, but Reece cuts me off, asking, “Your name’s Lexi?”

He doesn’t recognize it? Is he brand new?

“To some,” I answer carefully.

“You and Kitty know each other.”

I nod even though he didn’t pose it as a question.

Suddenly feeling flushed, I arrange my dress’s skirt so the thigh-high slit falls down both sides of my right leg.

Reece zeroes in on the movement, studying the newly exposed skin as well as the gold chain decorating my thigh.

“You’re Reece?”

Instead of answering, he asks, “Why’d you wanna be found?” His eyes rise to mine again. “If nothing was happening in here, why’d you agree to be found?”

“I guess I was hopeful.” I dip my face, going for sheepish as I peek up through my lashes at him. “Do you work here?”

From his spot on the other side of the coffee table, he seems to consider his answer before saying, “Yeah.”

I bend both knees and drag my stilettos up the leather upholstery until there’s just enough room for one more. “Do you…want to sit?”

He barely glances at the empty space at my feet.

“What were you hoping for?”

“Oh, you know…” I trail off.

“No, I don’t. What would a hollow like you want in a place like this?” He nods at my wedding ring. “Amarriedhollow.”

“Hollow?” I feign ignorance.

“Fox Hollow is made up of foxes or hollows and you’re no fox.”

“How can you tell?”

His laugh is just as condescending as his tone when he says, “The way you…”

I arch an eyebrow.Don’t slip. Not yet.

“The way I what?”

Taking a hand from his pocket, he waves at my body. “Dress. You’re dressed like a hollow.”

I remove one leg at a time from the loveseat, rotating so I’m sitting normally with my feet on the floor, then hang my head. “I see. I don’t fit in. Maybe I was wrong coming here. I just… It’s been a really rough week.”

Rustling from Reece’s direction grows closer.

“What were you hoping for?” he repeats directly above me.

Craning my neck back, I gaze up at him and force an exaggerated swallow.

“A little…”
