“It might as well be. I’ve never gotten anything lower than an A. This could ruin my perfect GPA.”

“When’s career week?”

“Why?” she asks the same way I did.

“Because I might know someone.” Whether she agrees to or not is its own challenge.

Breckyn sits forward, her hands entwined in front of her like she’s praying. “It’s next month but I can complete the shadowing before then, if needed. Tomorrow even. Whatever fits his schedule.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” I say, leaving out that Lex is a woman.

Next thing I know, Breckyn launches herself onto my lap, and throws her arms around my neck, squeezing so hard I let out another chuckle.

“You’re the best brother in the whole world.”

“I don’t know about that.” I jerk my chin at the saleslady watching us with a soft smile and even softer eyes. “Now let’s find you a pinstripe suit.”

Without bothering to knock, I push my way into Lex’s office and set the book down on her desk with the flower hidden behind it just like I did yesterday. The only difference today is I picked out a paperback.

Lex studies the flower first this time but doesn’t ask me what it is or what it means. She probably doesn’t know different flowers have different meanings. Most people don’t.

“It’s a Globeflower. It stands for gratitude.”

Her eyes meet mine. They’re blue again, like Starflower Jessie.

“Thank you. For yesterday.”

She doesn’t respond at all, just returns her attention to her laptop, clicking her mouse more times than necessary.

“The clothing—”

“How’s your lead?”

“Kaisin? He’s warming up to me.”

“Uh-huh. Why don’t you tell me what you have planned for today, so I can get on with my own work. I’m busy, and as usual, you’re wasting my time.”

I do the same thing as before, making up bullshit tasks I will not be completing. Lex keeps stealing glances at the book until finally, I stop to ask, “What?”

“What is she supposed to be?” she asks, staring at the red-skinned woman with horns and wings.

Not staring. Glaring.

“A succubus.”

She levels me with a look just as scrutinizing.

“It’s a female demon that fucks sleeping men.”

“I know what a succubus is. I’m wondering why one’s on my desk.”

“I thought it looked…entertaining.”

“Entertaining…” Leaning back, Lex props her high heels on her desk, the pointy tips less than an inch from the book’s spine. “A bit ironic, isn’t it?”

“Why? Is that something you do?”

“Is it somethingyoudo?” she bites back. “You’re the one that came into my room while I was unconscious and—”
