She would protect her child with every fiber of her being. She would fight tooth and claw to make this world a better place for him. And she knew without a doubt that her mates would do the same.

They were a family now.

Hruk, dark Hruk, reached down and gently stroked one scarred knuckle against the infant’s smooth, chubby cheek, taking care not to wake him.

“He’s perfect,” Hruk said, and Serenity thought she detected a hint of a choke in his voice. “Perfect…”

Jagga and Grodd both nodded in agreement.

“Perfect.”

At the end of the little room, Alyx was washing her hands with a cloth dipped in water. She was finally allowing her own exhaustion to show.

“Alyx, thank you,” Serenity said.

The woman just gave a tired smile, as if it were all in a day’s work for her.

“So,” she whispered. “What are you going to name him?”

It’s funny, but that detail had not even occurred to Serenity over the past days as her pregnancy had rapidly progressed. Now she looked at her mates in turn—Hruk, Jagga, Grodd—and the perfect name came to her mind.

“How about Throlf?” she asked.

The three ukkur smiled and nodded in agreement.

“Throlf,” Hruk said. “Yes, it is a good name.”

A good name indeed. It was a name that had secretly bound the three males together before. The name of their shared teacher and mentor. And now the name would bind them in a different and even stronger way—the name of their firstborn son.

With another smile, Alyx quietly departed, leaving the family alone to enjoy each other’s company.

Serenity was happier than she could ever remember. Her heart warmed with love and joy, like an ember in her chest. She felt totally safe and secure, surrounded by her three fearsome mates, with little baby Throlf cradled against her breast.

Their small cave was dark, but the future felt brighter than ever before.
