Great Moon, she was so beautiful.

This was not the first time Rufus had seen her naked. Once every couple of weeks or so, the woman would go down to a secluded spot on the bank of the creek that flowed through her ranch. There she would strip off her clothing and bathe herself in the clear water. It was not lust that had led Rufus to spy on her while she was bathing. It was his duty to watch over and protect her, especially when she was alone and vulnerable.

At least that’s what he told himself.

Tonight was different, however. The woman had not removed her own clothes. The alphas had done that for her, and they’d made hasty work of it. Her shirt had been torn open, revealing her voluptuous breasts to the warm glow of the campfire, and her jeans had been dragged down her legs, exposing the patch of dark curls nestled between her smooth, tanned thighs. A bandana was caught in her mouth to silence her.

“Why have you gagged her like a hostage?” Rufus demanded.

“She’s in heat,” the blond alpha said. He flicked his eyes downward. “But then, I take it you already knew that.”

Yeah. Rufus knew. He’d smelled her as soon as he’d jumped down to confront the two alphas. The air around their little camp was thick with her warm, sweet, needful aroma. Even though he’d never smelled a human omega in heat, his body had instantly understood that scent on a primal level, and it was responding in kind. His cock was harder than it had ever been in his life, so hard it actually hurt, and since he was wearing no clothing, that hardness was on full display for everyone to see… including Shannon Duffy.

For the first time since the encounter had started, Rufus looked at the woman’s eyes. Her pupils were dilated, and they were aimed right at the aching arousal jutting from between his legs. After a moment, she lifted her eyes to his face and moaned softly through her gag. It was a desperate, pleading sound, and Rufus could tell from the tone that she wasn’t pleading for help—at least not the kind of help he’d intended to give her when he’d jumped down off that cliff a few minutes ago.

By the Moon! Did she actually want him to…?

Through a tremendous effort of will, Rufus tore his eyes away from her and looked out over the dark spring. Stars danced across it surface.

Shannon Duffy was an omega! Had Samuel known this? He must have. He had raised her like his own daughter. So why hadn’t he ever said anything about it?

As soon as Rufus thought the question, he knew the answer to it.

He snapped his attention back to the blond alpha. “I can’t let this happen. I swore an oath to this woman’s father that I would protect her. I cannot let the two of you…”

His words trailed off.

“Let us what?” the blond alpha shot back. He was already unbuckling his belt. “Mate with her? You’re awful prim for a wolf, you know that? And as far aslettingit happen, there’s nothing you can do to stop it. You’d have better luck appealing against a thunderstorm than against the call of an omega in heat. It’s the primal duty of every alpha to answer that call. Now, we’re going to give this woman what she needs… andyou’regoing to help us give it to her.”

“What?” Rufus and the dark-haired alpha both snarled in unison.

“Damn it!” the blond one growled. “I know both of you can smell how strong her need is! I don’t know what she’s been doing to suppress her heat all these years, but whatever it was, her heat’s been stockpiling, just like wood in a woodshed. Now its been set alight, and it’s going to take all three of us to put it out.”

Rufus wanted to argue, but he knew the alpha was right. The woman’s scent was telling him exactly what she needed in a language more primal than words.

And the number it told him was three.

“Tanner, he isn’t even an alpha!” the dark one objected. “He’s a skinwalker!

“No I’m not!” Rufus barked. “Skinwalkers are witches, and I’m no witch! I’m a wolf.”

“Yeah, a wolf who can turn into a man. That’s too close to a skinwalker for my liking.”

“Easy,” the blond one cut in again. “He may not be exactly like us, but look at that gold on his shoulder. He’s got an alpha sign. His smell ain’t too far off from our own either.” He lowered his head. “And more importantly, the omega doesn’t seem to mind him.”

Shannon Duffy was lying on the ground half naked and moaning through the bandana in her mouth, her wide blue eyes glittering in the firelight as they darted around at the three males standing over her.

Great Moon, this looked bad. To an outsider, they would have looked like a gang of ravagers getting ready to despoil a poor helpless woman against her will. The reality was different. They were going to help her through the agony of her heat.

It was Rufus’dutyto help her.

“It’s good that you gagged her,” he said quietly. “There is another alpha nearby.”

The blond alpha was in the middle of unbuttoning his fly. He looked up, surprised.

“What?”

“You’re being followed.”
