I grimaced. “Yes.”

“Why?”

With a sigh, I glanced up at Braz to show him how unhappy I was with him for bringing that up, then admitted, “He said something I didn’t like, so I punched him in the face.”

“Hard enough you broke his jaw,” Braz added.

I scowled at him. “He’s a shifter. He heals fast.”

“What did he say?” Theon asked.

When I hesitated, Braz said, “You can tell us.”

I sighed again because I didn’t want to repeat a word that bastard had said, but I didn’t want to lie to them, either. “He asked me if my little Lord forced me to take the giant monster’s cock up my ass while he watched.” I grimaced when I felt Braz stiffen. “And when I told him not to talk about you that way and to kiss my ass, he said…”

“What?” Braz asked.

“He said he’d rather die than touch the monster’s little bitch, and then he started saying something else, but I punched him in the jaw before he could. And when he was screaming, I spit in his face and said I’d rather be the bitch to an amazing and remarkable half-orc than the bitch to a small-dicked asshole who wouldn’t be able to find my prostate if I gave him a map.” I shrugged again.

Theon and Braz both gaped at me.

When they were still gaping at me a minute later, I said, “Sorry. Please don’t worry about a word that asshole said.”

Braz waved me off. “Nica…”

“I’m sorry,” I said again.

He shook his head. “No, it’s… you didn’t have to do that.”

“I’m not about to let assholes say shit about you. That didn’t fly before, and it sure as hell isn’t going to now. No one has a right to make you feel like you’re less than them. You’re wonderful. Both of you are.”

Braz squeezed my shoulder, and Theon leaned in to kiss my cheek and whisper in my ear, “Thank you for looking out for him.” I was sure Braz heard him with his superior hearing, but he pretended not to.

I cupped my little bird’s cheek with my hand. “I will always protect our family.”

Theon turned his head to kiss my palm, then leaned into it and smiled. I caressed his skin, then pushed my hand into his hair, massaging his scalp. Theon closed his eyes. When he started to droop, I chuckled and pushed him until his forehead was resting on Braz’s huge biceps.

A few minutes later, I said, “Oh, I forgot to tell you two the other day. I’m going to be helping in the healing tent after training a few days a week, which means I’ll have an in with the head healer.”

They both stared at me like I wasn’t making any sense at all.

I rolled my eyes. “You know he has a ton of books, right? He lends them out to people if they have something to trade or if they’re injured. I told him that several of my family love reading, and he said I could borrow one or two books at a time since I’m helping.” I smiled at Theon, then shot one up to Braz. “I’ll have new books for you two to read later tonight. Once you’re done reading those, I’ll take them back and trade them out.”

“Really?” Theon asked.

I nodded. “Yeah. I know we only have the one book in our tent right now, and we don’t really have anything to trade at the moment, so I thought this would be a good way to fix that issue. I can deal with other people for a few hours a week.”

“Are you sure? You don’t have to do that for us,” Theon said. Braz nodded in agreement.

I waved them away. “I’m sure I’ll learn some things that might come in handy later on, and I don’t mind sharing my tonic recipes if it means it helps others.” Maybe I didn’t like people, but I didn’t want anyone suffering if there was a way for me to help.

“Thank you, Nica,” Braz said quietly, squeezing my shoulder again.

“Thank you,” my little bird said.

Theon leaned in to capture my mouth. He kissed me long enough that my cock started to fill, so I wasn’t surprised when Braz cleared his throat loudly and said, “We need to head back. We’re going to be late for afternoon training because Theon and I need to eat first.”

“So do I,” I said, but then I pulled Theon back in to meet my lips.
