He did, and I finally got a better look at my surroundings. Honestly, there wasn’t much to look at. There were three other beds, all empty, a few more small tables between the cots, and a big table at the end of the tent. Behind the table, there was a set of shelves with tonics and supplies. The healer’s tent. I’d been here a million times before when I’d helped the healer.

I frowned when I found Wey staring at me with this sad expression on his face. What was going on with him?

“What?”

He shook his head.

I didn’t know what his deal was, but maybe Theon would be able to tell me once he returned from wherever he was. Sometimes he got things out of Wey that I never could. “Where’s Theon?”

Wey closed his eyes, and something about his expression made my heart race, and my stomach drop to the floor.

“Where’s Theon, Wey? What happened? Is he hurt?”

“He’s okay. He’s not hurt.”

My tension drained a little but didn’t disappear. Weylyn was still acting too off for me to fully relax. “Thank the goddess. Where is he?”

“Nica, do you remember what happened?”

I opened my mouth to answer when I realized I still couldn’t remember. I’d thought that being awake for a few minutes would help, but there was still no memory there.

Wey cupped my cheek and pressed a kiss to my forehead, saying, “It’s okay. Take your time, baby.”

With a deep breath, I closed my eyes, leaning into Wey’s hand for comfort as I tried to remember. The mission to take Lord Holcot. Fighting, keeping Theon beside me and safe. And then… and then…

Lady Holcot.

My eyes flew open, and I gasped out, clinging to Wey’s hand. “Theon’s safe? He’s really okay? Lady Holcot was there and—”

“He’s okay, Nica. Theon’s fine.”

I blew out a relieved breath, but my heart was still racing, especially because the look on Wey’s face screamed sorrow. “What is it, Wey?”

He cringed. “Do you remember how you got hurt? Do you remember what happened when Theon saw Lady Holcot?”

I started to shake my head when it came back to me. Trying to comfort Theon, a blast throwing me backward, and pain. So much pain.

Wey nodded, reading my expression. “Theon lost control, and you were severely injured, Nica. You’ve been asleep for three days.”

I let out a choked sound. Oh goddess. Theon must be wrought with guilt. I could only imagine how he was feeling. My poor, sweet little bird.

“Wh-where’s Theon, Wey? I need to tell him it’s okay. He needs to know it wasn’t his fault.”

Wey ran his hand through my hair, or what was left of it since I could tell some of it had been burned away. He cupped my chin and forced me to look into his black and silvery eyes that were shiny with unshed tears. That alone was enough to make my chest feel like it had an orc sitting on it.

He sent me a shaky smile and kissed my lips softly. “Theon, Florin, and Braz went to find our little mage some help.”

I shook my head slightly but didn’t pull out of Wey’s hand. I didn’t understand. “Find help where?”

He released me and pulled a piece of parchment from his pocket, gripping it firmly in his hands. “I… I don’t know what it says. I only know that I was too late to stop them. They were gone by the time I found out they’d left.” He thrust the paper to me. “Will you… read it aloud?” His voice sounded rough, almost broken.

Taking the paper, I unfolded it, and my chest felt so tight I wasn’t sure I’d be able to speak. But I had to because Wey needed to know what this… letter said. I glanced at the bottom. A letter from my little bird.

I cleared my throat and read it aloud.

“My dearest Nica, Wey, and Braz—”

“Wait,” I said, cutting myself off. “I thought you said Braz was with them?”
