With Love,

Your precious little bird

Theon”

I wiped under my eye, catching a tear before it could fall. Wey pulled me into a fierce hug, and I breathed him in, letting his strength and his love for me be the comfort I needed.

“He doesn’t want us to come there,” I whispered into his skin.

Wey’s hold on me tightened. “It’s okay, love. We still have each other. And… And…” His voice cracked. “He’ll be back… eventually.”

I nodded against him, hoping to be a comfort to my sweet, grumpy gargoyle.

Goddess, I was so angry at Theon. So angry and so damn sad. Every time I thought about him, the hole in my heart grew bigger. Sometimes I was afraid it would be irreparable by the time he finally came back.

Wey held me, and I held him back for a long time. Neither of us said anything because there was nothing to say. We both missed him, and we were both upset and heartbroken.

After a long time, I pulled back, cleared my throat, wiped away my tears, and said, “Let’s read Braz’s letter.”

Wey nodded and pulled me back into his side, kissing my temple. “I’m ready.” His voice broke, and I knew he’d been crying, too.

After an inhale, I began reading Braz’s very neat handwriting.

“Dear Nica and Weylyn,

I’m sorry for leaving that night. I wanted to come find you, but I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to find Theon and Florin in time if I delayed.

I want you to know that I’m protecting them both. I’m doing everything in my power to keep them safe. I would die before I let something happen to them, so try not to worry, although I know that’s an impossible task.

The fae have been welcoming and are treating us well. Florin is learning about his heritage and about his new power. Our sweet Theon is learning control. He’s not there yet, but he’s making progress already, so I’m confident he’ll learn, and we’ll be able to come back to you.

You probably don’t want to hear this, but I miss my friends, and I wish you were here with us. But we’re okay, and you’re doing important work with the Resistance. You need to stay and help them fight, and once Theon has control over his magic, we will join you.

We will. We’ll return to you, I’ll make sure of it.

Please stay safe.

Weylyn, don’t let Nica do anything stupid.”

“Hey!”I yelled in outrage as Wey chuckled and squeezed me.

“He knows you well.”

I scowled at him as I wiped another tear and tried to hold in a laugh. “Don’t be mean.” Goddess, I missed Braz, too. He’d been my constant companion for over seven years.

Wey kissed my pouting lips, then tapped the paper. “Can you finish? Please? I wish I could read these myself.”

“I could teach you.”

His back straightened. “You… could?”

“Yeah, of course. I should’ve thought of that sooner. Now that we’re away from Natas, I can teach you. I’ll find some writing coal and paper, get some books from the little library they have, and we can start practicing after dinner.”

Wey swallowed loud enough for me to hear. “Really?”

I kissed his throat. “Absolutely. It’ll be fun.” And that was much better to think about than thinking about my chest hurting. Theon wasn’t the only one digging a hole in my heart.

“Thank you, Nica.”
