“That’s Matt bringing a load of hay. Are you okay here?” Davis said, standing and looking over toward the stable where the horses grazed up on the hill at the sparse grass that grew on the sand dunes. There was pasture out back which looked green and lush, but Jubilee could imagine that it would take a lot of hay to see the horses through the winter.

“I’m just fine. You go on,” Kim said, waving him off.

“We’re going to head out too. The girls and I are going to play in the lake for a little bit before we go back in and get back to work at the bed-and-breakfast.”

“All right. Have a good time. And if you guys would like, you’re always welcome to come and take the horses for a ride. As long as we don’t have them rented out to someone else.”

“Wow. That’s very generous of you. I... I rode a little bit and took lessons for about a year when I was younger. I haven’t ridden in a decade or more.”

“It comes back to you, like riding a bicycle. Our horses are very gentle. Matt has some, but they’re a little bit more high-strung.”

“We definitely want to start out with yours. The girls have never ridden.”

“Could we do it, Mom? I really want to ride horses,” Penelope begged.

“Mom? Could we?” Scarlett echoed.

“Probably not this week. We need to get settled in. But maybe next?” She lifted her brows at Kim. They were probably busy getting ready for the party on Saturday and wouldn’t have time anyway. She didn’t have a clue as to how to saddle up a horse or anything. She had learned it all when she’d taken lessons, but it seemed like so long ago, she couldn’t even begin to remember.

Kim nodded in agreement.

She nodded back, then looked down at her girls. “We’ll get together with Miss Kim, and we’ll figure something out.” Maybe she could talk to Lana who might have some ideas of where she could go to brush up on the things that she needed to know.

She said goodbye to Kim and tried not to take any extra glances over at Matt who had driven his truck up to the barn and backed in. It was okay to admire a man like that, she told herself, but he would never see anything of interest in her, and she would be better off if she didn’t get her hopes up.

Plus, she was here for a new start. Not a new relationship. It would be best if she remembered that.

Chapter 7

“So Jubilee said shewas staying with your mom,” Davis said casually as he threw a hay bale off the wagon.

Matt admired Davis. He’d moved to Strawberry Sands not long ago and had been a solid support to Kim as she had their baby early and had spent a lot of time in the NICU. Matt admired the way Davis had totally been there for her, helping in any way he could and keeping the townspeople informed.

He had been thrilled to hear that they had gotten married, and while parties weren’t necessarily his thing, he was looking forward to Kim and Davis’s party, just because he felt like they definitely had something to celebrate. The health of their baby, their marriage, and the fact that they had finally come together as a family.

That was never going to happen with him and Eva. That ship had sailed long, long ago, if it was ever in the harbor to begin with, which he doubted. At the very most, he would hope to be able to be civil to her for the sake of their daughter.
