“What?” He looked at her like he didn’t understand what she was saying. Then he saw her smile.

“You’re supposed to say that he’s not going to run away with me at all, so I don’t have to worry about it.”

“Oh.” He grinned. “He’s not going to run away with you at all, so you don’t have to worry about it.”

She laughed, but she said, “It’s too late. But at least now you know for someone else.”

“Thank you. I appreciate you making sure that I know the proper answers. It’s a learning experience.”

He handed her the reins, watched for just a moment while she adjusted them in her hands, holding them the way she’d been taught, before he nodded almost imperceptibly and untied Boots from the fence.

Chapter 18

Matt swung easily intothe saddle, like he was born into it, although Jubilee knew he wasn’t. Not really. But he’d been riding for a lot longer than she had, so it made sense that he was more comfortable than she.

“You ready?”

“Yep.” She didn’t feel ready, but her voice didn’t shake, and she was grateful for that, at least.

He turned his horse, and they walked down the street.

Strawberry Sands was not busy, not even a little, and they walked right down the middle of the street.

“I love that sound,” she said as the horses’ hooves clip-clopped on the macadam road.

“Me too. There’s just something really relaxing about it. So rhythmic, and just a perfect sound, not too sharp, but it gives you a satisfied feeling.”

“Something about horses too. They are fun to watch, majestic, noble, and are like eye candy almost.”

“They’re a selling point. You can put a picture of a horse pretty much anywhere, and it draws people’s eyes. It’s kind of like flowers, it makes people smile.”

“That’s true. I mean, I don’t think you could probably sell toothpaste with horses, but—”

He huffed out a laugh. “I don’t know. If you get the right angle, they do have nice teeth sometimes. Big anyway.”

“All the better to bite you with,” she said.
